Lucknow getting off to a quick start with goals from John Chappel and Brett Phil- lips and were able to Hold the 81's scoreless through the first. Penalty trouble soon caught up to the Lancers, with Mapleton -Minto capi- talizing on powerplay opportunities to take a 3-2 lead mid -way through the second period. Fighting back, the Lancers were able to net a powerplay goal of their own scored by new- comer defenseman Rob Ringette to even the score at 3 all. The 81's would score one more late period goal to end the period with a 1 goal lead. The third period saw more penalty trouble for the Lanc- ers, and again the 81's were able to take advantage of a shorthanded Lucknow team. The Lancers were unable to find the back of the net in the third period eventually los- ing the opening game with a final score of 9-3. On Saturday, October 10 the Lucknow squad travelled to Ripley to face off against the local rival Wolves. The first period proved to be a goaltender battle with both teams being unable to score. Early in the second, the Wolves managed to crack open the scoring taking an early period two goal lead. A powerplay goal from defenseman Scott Miller closed the gap to one, but it was the Wolves who would score late in the period to restore their two goal lead. The third period became a special teams' battle as both teams ran into pen- alty trouble, and the goal - tenders again shutting the door for most of the period. Still battling, the Lancers scored a late powerplay goal to cut the lead to one, but their momentum was quickly slowed by a late period penalty. Finishing the game shorthanded, the Lancers were unable to overcome the deficit fin- ishing the game with a 3-2 loss. Having lost a tight one in Ripley, the Lancers team tried to carry some of the momentum gained from their previous game's week- end in Ripley onto their next opponents, the Durham Ticats. Both teams traded goals throughout the game in a high paced, high scoring battle. The Lancers, having held multiple leads throughout the game, saw scoring from multiple players, including a hat -trick from forward Jamie Miller and a two goal perfor- mance from veteran Ean Moffat. Blake Smith, playing in his second year as a Lanc- ers goaltender stood his ground against a flurry of Durham shots, helping the Lancers to their first win of the season, an 8-6 victory over the Ticats. Coming home for their second of the weekend, the Lancers hosted the Shallow Lake Crushers in Saturday's game. Again trying the car- ryover momentum from the previous game, the Lancers opened the scoring 30 sec- onds into the game with a goal from left winger Brett Binning. A physical battle ensued for most of the game with both teams trading goals. Lucknow's back end pro- vided an additional two goals for the Lancers, with goals from defensemen Rob Ringette and Brett Phillips. Lucknow however was una- ble to find a solution for Shallow Lake's scorers who netted 5 goals of their own which proved to be enough to win the game. The Lucknow Lancers will be looking for their next win on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Shelburne Muskies.
