Once upon a time -Bruce County Memories
Bard of the
Canadian Lakes
Indian Summer
Along the line of smoky hills,
The crimson forest stands
And all the day the blue jay calls
Throughout the autumn lands.
Now by the brook the maple leans
With all his glory spread,
And all the sumacs on the hills
Have turned their green to red.
Do the above lines recall nostalgic
memories of school days? At such a
season as the poet describes, on

Campbell was born in Kitchener in
1861, the son of an Anglican minis-

Campbell' s ministry ultimately to

Toronto Globe that he saw the great
waters as " blue, limpid and lumi-
nous, throbbing and placid in the

sunlight, ---angry and tumultuous

sheeted in the dull winter days."
As a memorial to William
Campbell, a cairn was erected at
the northern entrance to Wiarton.
It has since been moved to the
Wiarton park where it stands in
memory of a poet who contributed
much to Canada in general and to
the Bruce Peninsula in particular.
