Pet safety tips
for pet owners
Submitted by Ontario SPCA
Huron County Animal Centre
With the scariest night of
the year soon upon us, it's the
perfect occasion to remind
pet parents how to protect
their pets from the dangers of
Halloween night. The Ontario
SPCA Huron County animal
Centre recommends follow-
ing these simple precautions
to ensure your pet can howl
the night away!
First, keep your pets away
from candy intended for trick
or -treaters. Chocolate, even in
small doses, can be fatal to
both dogs and cats. Candies
contain the artificial sweet-
ener xylitol and can also be
fatal if ingested by animals.
Second, it's best to keep an
eye on wires and cords from
electric lights. Dogs and cats
might decide to chew on
them and may suffer serious
injuries as a result.
It's also important to pre-
vent your pet from munching
on festive Halloween pump-
kins and other plants so they
don't get upset stomachs.
"Keeping your pet safe on
Halloween should be a top
priority on such a busy night.
Pets may run out of the
house when answering the
door for trick -or -treaters or
become frightened from the
amount of traffic at the front
door," said Tamara Minns,
Ontario SPCA Huron County
Animal Centre Coordinator.
It's best to keep pets in a
separate room during trick -
or -treating hours.
Halloween is also a great
time to consider adopting a
black, calico or orange cat. Not
only do these cats match with
the Halloween theme, they

make great pets! Black cats are
least likely to be adopted from

as much joy as any other cat.

The first snow of the season fell on October 17, 2015. The following morning there was quite a
layer on the trees that still held a majority of their foliage decked out in their autumn colours.
This made for a spectacular display alongside the Lucknow Presbyterian Church.
