The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-11-25, Page 5Gordon Morrison turns 99 Submitted Gordon Morrison marked his 99th birthday with cake after the church service at Lucknow United Church on Nov. 8, 2015. Morrison was born in 1916. He celebrated his 99th birthday by inviting his family and three guests to a party at Lucknow United Church on Nov. 14. There were 36 adults and six of his great-grandchildren in attendance. A bountiful luncheon was catered by the United Church Women. Huron Health Unit wants multi -unit housing smoke-free The Huron County Health Unit is calling on local multi- unit housing providers to adopt smoke-free policies in their units. Nov 24-30 is Home Safety Week and the health unit is using it as an opportunity to argue the change in policy. "It's important for land- lords and tenants to come together and adopt smoke- free policies for their build- ings to help protect everyone from unnecessary health and safety risks," said tobacco enforcement officer Patrick Landry. Currently, one in three Ontarians resides in an apartment, condo or co-op P where they maybe involun- tarily exposed osed to tobacco P smoke through shared walls, hallways or ventilation sys- tems. Smoking indoors is also the number one source of fires in the home. Second-hand smoke con- tains more than 7,000 chemi- cals. Exposure to second-hand smoke in multi -unit housing affects the health of all resi- dents, especially infants, the elderly, and those with pre- existing health conditions like asthma and chronic obstruc- tive pulmonary disease. Pets can also be affected. Tenants can ask for build- ings to adopt smoke-free policies, which will help benefit their health by reducing their exposure to second-hand smoke. Smoke-free policies can also help reduce the risk of fire, which improves the bottom line for landlords. Properties with smoke- free policies are cheaper on average to renovate or turno- ver than those where smok- ing is allowed.
