The annual shave -offs are just
getting started across the region
with several school and
community events kicking it
off. Heroes For Hope, formerly
known as Cops for Cancer, has
gone through many changes
over the years with more and
more people coming on board
to support the event. The
decision was made to adopt the
new name Heroes For Hope,
because everyone who supports,
donates or participates
is a HERO in a cancer patients
eyes.
Since the program began in
1994, it has raised more than
$50.4 million. This year Stow -It
Self Storage in Owen Sound has
partnered with the Canadian
Cancer Society's Bluewater
Community Office to host a
combined Heroes For Hope
Shave Off and 'Storage Wars'
fundraiser, based on the popu-
lar television show. Donations
are still being accepted to fill the
three storage units that will be
auctioned off on Saturday, June
6th and can be dropped off at
Stow -It Self Storage on
20th Street East in Owen Sound
or call 519.376.8831 to arrange a
pick up.
Over the years, the shave offs
and going "down to the wood"
so to speak, have evolved into
hair dying, leg waxing, beard
shaves and ponytail donations.
If you would like to donate a
ponytail it must be unprocessed
hair, clean and must be 8-10
inches in length. The hair is sent
to Pantene Beautiful lengths for
processing into human hair
wigs. The Bluewater Community
Office is grateful to receive
donations of these wigs back to
the office to be distributed to
cancer patients in the area at no
cost.
To register for the Owen
Sound event or another Heroes
For Hope event near you, go to
www.cancer.ca/heroes-
forhope or call the Bluewater
Community Office at
519-376-6011.
All the funds raised by the
Canadian Cancer Society's Blue -
water unit Heroes For Hope
campaign are designated to
pediatrics (children's) cancer
and to help support families
with children going through
cancer and their transportation
costs.

Emmaly Brown, a ten -year-old
resident of Lucknow, has chosen to
donate ten inches of her hair to the
Canadian Cancer Society to be
made into a wig for someone strug-
gling against cancer.
The family did online research
and found that the best way for
them to have the donation take
place was through the Pantene
Beautiful Lengths program, which
is in partnership with the Canadian
Cancer Society.
Catherine Brown describes her
daughter Emmaly as always having
had a big heart. She is always car-
ing and worrying for others. Cath-
erine states that both she and her
husband Ken, "are very proud of
Emmaly. Her choices to care about
others define what a wonderful you
lady she is going to be.
Emmaly says she will miss the
compliments about her long red
hair, but is so happy to do some-
thing nice for someone else.
Emmaly's donation was made
privately. You can follow Emmaly's
example and learn more about the

gram and donating through the
