The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-07-22, Page 5Wednesday, July 22, 2015 • Lucknow Sentinel 5 Artist Michele Miller paints Annual show and sale Goderich Art Club a "Vision of Home" Blyth Festival Art Gallery Submitted The Blyth Festival Art Gal- lery will be presenting paint- ings depicting a Goderich area artist's "Vision of Home': Michele Miller graduated from University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Over the past eight years, she has participated in a number of exhibitions in various gal- leries in Ontario, including a series of cow paintings at the Agricentre in Guelph. She has taught painting classes for students of all ages and has won several major awards for her work. Since moving to Huron County three years ago, she is always looking for new ways to see and capture the beauty around her. Michele works in watercolours and oils, depending on the light and mood of the subject. To her, they are the most impor- tant aspects of her paintings. "I am fascinated by what makes a place a home. It is so much more than just a building. A home becomes a reflection of who we are. So a sense of home for me can come from a memory that is triggered, from a strong con- nection with a place I've been or when I am aware of just feeling at home and comfortable in my sur- roundings. That perception of home could even occur in a forest or by water where, all of a sudden, I have this con- nection or feeling of peace" She is intrigued by the way a house can evoke the per- sonalities of the people that dwell within it. In a way, the house becomes a form of portrait of the inhabitants, and she wants to capture that essence. Some places exude a very strong person- ality or character for her. Many of the paintings are homes and landscapes of Huron County. Since moving to this county she has been on a journey to redefine her perception of home. The public can view Michele Miller's exploration of what "home" means to her, in the Bainton Gallery, Blyth Memorial Hall, from July 24 to August 15. Her exhibition of oils and watercolour paint- ings, "A Vision of Home" is curated by Lauren Marshall and sponsored by Maarten Bokhout and Helena McShane. The gallery is located next to the Blyth Fes- tival box office and is open during box office hours. Goderich Coop Gallery Submitted The Goderich Coop Gal- lery's Guest Artist for the month of July, Dominique Cinq-Mars introduces us to a different vision of what, to the casual viewer, might appear as something which has no use or purpose. Dominique uses such "found objects" to make her art. She works on wood, or stretched canvas to produce two and three dimensional collages using these bits and pieces to portray both the rug- gedness inherent in the items, such as discarded tools or pieces of driftwood, and the more feminine pieces such as lace or even metals which can be made to look like lace, or jewelry. In this way Dominique hopes the viewer will appreciate both rugged masculinity juxtaposed with femininity, which is mani- fested all around us. Cinq-Mars is a retired ele- mentary teacher in the French -Immersion System, who always integrated art into her classes. After retire- ment, she decided to explore her own creative nature, and evolved from painting with oils, to her present incarna- tion as a Three Dimensional artist. Some of her works with driftwood have been created using pieces found along the shores of Lake Huron. As part of the summer's "Bird Extravaganza", there will be a painting workshop with local Artist Devon McCallum on July 30, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Huron County Museum. Everyone will go home with a painting of a colourful Mallard on real driftwood, you can register at the Museum by phoning 519-524-2686 ext 205. Don't delay, as spaces are limited, pre -registration cost is $15.00. Then, on Saturday August 1, to usher in the holiday weekend, children are invited to register at the Coop, get some sidewalk chalk, and paint to their heart's content on the Gal- lery sidewalk....who knows, maybe a brand new bird species will emerge. Do plan to visit the Goder- ich Coop Gallery during the month of August to see the unique art of Dominique Cinq-Mars, enjoy our flock of flying cranes, and, if you haven't already done so, see the Coop member's display of birds which opened in July and carries on through August. Summer hours are Monday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. See you there! Valerie Gillies/Lucknow Sentinel Tyler and Cameron Murray are busy pruning hedges and doing yard work for their cousins in Lucknow. July 15, 2015. Submitted The Goderich Art Club is currently planning for our 22 nd consecutive Art Show and Sale held this year during the weekend of August 7, 8, and 9. As planning for the event gears up, club members have been reminiscing about our past. While this particular incarnation of our club has been meeting for over 22 years, our history shows that there has been a vibrant group of painters belonging to a Goderich Art Club for well over 50 years. In many local public venues, there can still be found paintings done by past Art Club members. Our history shows that not only do we have along tradition of local artists painting together, but as we look back at the technical aspects of creating art, we realize that while an interest in painting persists through our history, that this current gener- ation of artists enjoys access to many modern materials which past members could not have dreamed of. From changes in the formulation of paints, now manufactured with safer pig- ments, to the vast array of poly- mer products which help today's artists to expand their techniques, and even discover new ways to use old products, it is an exciting time for artists. We hope you will join us at the McKay Centre for this year's Art Show and Sale, Art Club members will be there on Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. We'd like you to stay awhile, enjoy a free snack, chat with club mem- bers, and see if you can imag- ine one of our artistic crea- tions in your home! We hope to see you there.
