Canada 1 cna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Happy Canada Day! It is a proud day to be Canadian. Per- sonally, I am proud to be Canadian every day. Canada Day gives us all a reason to stop and think about our won- derful country. The Lucknow & District Lions shared their pride through the Pride Project to light the spark in the local Grade one stu- dents. Parks Canada has stepped up and helped fund the restoration of the Point Clark Lighthouse which re -opened this past weekend. Another heritage project was taken on by the St. Joseph's Kingsbridge community with their purchase of the decommis- sioned church. The committee is working hard to get the building back into shape to once again be the hub of their community. The Lucknow Kinsmen were proud to open the refurbished Victoria Park to encourage area residents and visitors to be active. The new basketball/volleyball/ pickle ball courts are fully accessible and continuously open to accommodate all. The community of Lucknow showed their pride this past weekend, as well, with another successful Strawberry Summerfest. Of course, the kickoff event was the Dungan- non Super Pull the previous weekend. This has become the largest event of its kind in Huron County and is internationally known. Trinity United Church is proud of the accomplishments of the child they spon- sored in Hong Kong in the 1980s. They were surprised and excited to hear from their child after so many years and are planning a reception to welcome her and her family to Canada to meet in person. Be sure to check the list of names of some of the Sunday School children who made such a difference in another's life. Another proud accomplishment is the opening of a new laundromat in Lucknow. Check out the Coin Laundry on Campbell Street. The Living Library at LCPS had many pre- senters proud to share their experiences and expertise with the students from LCPS, BPS and RHCS. This is an amazing opportunity for both presenters and students to interact up close and personal for meaningful dis- cussions and a chance to ask questions. The sponsors and staff of the Lucknow Sentinel wish all a happy and safe Canada Day. Show your pride! www.lucknowsentinel.com Lucknow News Ruth Dobrensky Well I certainly hope everyone in town enjoyed this year's Strawberry Summerfest. Although I wasn't able to attend, it certainly looked as though there was something for everyone from last Thurs- day right through to Sun- day. I'm sure that all of you who were able to attend some or all of the events had a good time. Congratulations to the Summerfest Committee for all the great work they did this year. I attended the Dobren- sky family reunion held this year in Youngstown, N.Y. We as usual had a great time playing games, eating, visiting and catch- ing up on what everyone has been doing for the past year as many of us only see each other once a year. I stayed for the week- end with my cousin Jean and her husband, and we had a chance to catch up properly. Jean and Tom celebrated their 50th anniversary recently and I was one of their bridesmaids. Today is Canada Day and I hope that everyone has a chance to enjoy our special national holiday in a fitting and joyous man- ner. We have one of the greatest countries in the world and we are blessed to be able to live in such a great place despite all our wacky politicians and their shenanigans. Hope- fully this next election we'll get some genuine and honest people voted in. In case you hadn't noticed, Highway 86 is undergoing construction and the detour is a long and out of the way coun- try tour if you're headed to Wingham. We can expect an increase in the amount of pedestrian traffic as scooters, rollerblades, skateboards and bicycles take to the streets and sidewalks. The South Bruce OPP is offering the following tips for a safe and enjoy- able summer: Slow down and drive with care, especially near parks and recreation centres; Use crosswalks or inter- sections to cross streets safely. Never step out into traffic between parked cars; Bicycle hel- mets are required by law and reduce the risk of head injury by 85% when worn properly; Ensure that swimmers are always properly super- vised; Never leave pets or children unattended in a hot car; Follow your chil- dren online. If you're not connected with them - who is? Parents and care givers are asked to review safety rules with their youth. Summer time may be a break from learning, but it can't be a break from safety. policebrief POLARIS SPORTSMAN ATV STOLEN (ASHFIELD-COLBORNE- WAWANOSH, ON) - Huron County Ontario Provincial Po- lice (OPP) officers are inves- tigating the theft of a Polaris Sportsman All -Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that was stolen from a Westmount Line residence earlier this week.
