The Lucknow Kinsmen are
proud to be able to open the newly
refurbished tennis and basketball
courts at Victoria Park in Lucknow
in time for the school summer holi-
days. The ribbon cutting and open-
ing ceremonies were held on June
23, 2015 with students from both
Lucknow Central Public School
and Brookside Public School
attending.
The students had a chance to
enjoy the courts and a barbecue
lunch prior to the ceremony. Just
before the ribbon cutting, Kinsmen
Court Chair Lyndon Jonston
explained to the students gathered
that the grey lines on the basketball
court are for a game called pickle
ball that it is hoped will catch on in
this area. The Kinsmen have sup-
plied basketballs, with the inten-
tion that there will always four
available for use at the park. Jon-
ston informed those present that
the balls are in a distinctive red and
blue to discourage them leaving
the park.
There are still some improve-
ments to be completed, including
replacing trees, installing a
rebound wall to practice tennis
shots and a windscreen. The sign
with the court rules is not yet
mounted. Rules will advise
against having or using gum, or
wheeled recreational equipment
such as skateboards, scooters or
bicycles on the courts. Although
glass will not be prohibited, it is
hoped that those who use the
courts will be very careful not to
cause a broken glass hazard to
occur.
The intent of the park is that it is
for use by all ages and is now fully
open for use.
During the opening ceremony it
was recognized that the Kinsmen
received a lot of help to complete
this project, including from
Huron -Kinloss Township, mainly
through Recreation Director
Mike Fair.
Deputy Mayor of Huron -Kinloss
Wilf Gamble commented that
these are the most beautiful courts
he had seen and we are lucky to
have them here in Lucknow. He
added, "I hope they are well used.
The Kinsmen have done a tremen-
dous job."
