The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-01-21, Page 9Don't Drive on a Closed Road
South Bruce OPP
During the recent winter
storm, South Bruce Ontario Pro-
vincial Police (OPP) officers
closed some area roads in the
interest of public safety. Some of
the road closures lasted for days
which is inconvenient and frus-
trating, but driving on a closed
road is not just illegal, it's gam-
bling with safety.
During the last storm, warn-
ings were given and charges
were laid as South Bruce OPP
officers encountered vehicles on
the closed roads. A few motor-
ists chose to drive around a road
closed barricade and continue
driving along the closed road in
the presence of a marked police
cruiser.
On January 10, 2015 a male
travelling with 4 small children
was turned back 011 Bruce
County Road 23 as officers were
working in near white out con-
ditions to assist with removal of
stranded vehicles including a
snow plow that had entered the
ditch.
Motorists that choose to drive
on a closed road are not just
Use Caution on the Ice
South Bruce OPP
Southern Bruce County has
been experiencing some
extremely cold temperatures,
but you can't assume that you'll
be safe on the ice. The South
Bruce Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) is offering residents the
following information about ice.
Ice does not freeze at a uni-
form thickness across most
lakes and rivers. This can be
particularly evident at the start
of the winter season when near -
shore ice is often much thicker
and safer than ice further out.
Not all ice is created equal. Ice
that has formed over flowing
water, springs, pressure cracks,
old ice holes or around the
mouths of rivers and streams can
be weaker than surrounding ice.
Clear blue ice is the strongest.
White or opaque ice is much
weaker. Ice that has a honey-
combed look, common during
thaws or in the spring, should be
avoided altogether.
Traveling on frozen lakes or
rivers with snowmobiles or
vehicles can be particularly
dangerous and added precau-
tions must be taken.
Heavy snow on frozen lakes
and rivers can insulate the ice
below, causing the ice to freeze
slower.
It's important to let others
know where you're planning to
fish and advise when you plan
to return. If you are missing, res-
cue crews can narrow their
search and potentially save your
life.
Rules of the Trail
South Bruce OPP
Snow has finally arrived in
Southern Bruce County, which
means the snowmobile enthusi-
asts will be out riding. With this
in mind, the South Bruce
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
is sending snowmobile opera-
tors a reminder on some of the
laws in the Motorized Snow
Vehicle Act.
Snowmobile drivers must
carry their driver's licence or
snowmobile operator's card
when they ride. If your licence is
under suspension, you can't
drive a snowmobile either.
Licence, proof of registration and
proof of insurance must be pro-
duced to a police officer on
demand, when operating a
snowmobile.
A snowmobile driver must
stop for police when signalled.
Speed limits must be
obeyed. A snowmobile driver
can be charged for speeding.
A snowmobile must not be
driven along the serviced portion
of the roadway, except to cross at
a right angle. This includes the
shoulder of the road.
Impaired driving laws apply to
snowmobiles anywhere in Can-
ada whether on private property
or not. Don't mix alcohol and
snowmobiling. The South Bruce
OPP and the OFSC have a zero
tolerance for impaired
operation.
Snowmobiles must not be
driven on private property with-
out the owner's permission; vio-
lators may be subject to a charge
subjecting themselves to unnec-
essary risk and breaking the
law. When their vehicle gets
stuck, they are hampering the
efforts of road service crews
working to clear the road and
get it open for everyone to
use. In addition, emergency ser-
vices personnel have to put
themselves at risk trying to
locate the stranded driver.
The penalty for driving on a
closed road is a $110 fine and 3
demerit points, but the conse-
quences can be far worse if you
become involved in a
collision.
Parents - be mindful while
children are out of school, as
they may venture out on frozen
ponds, ditches or area water-
ways. Children should never
play on or near ice covered bod-
ies of water unless directly
supervised by an experienced
adult.
Winter weather conditions
can be unpredictable and varia-
ble, proper equipment and
experience is necessary to have
a safe winter season on the
ice. For more information on ice
safety, visit the Royal Lifesaving
Society online at HYPERLINK

"_blank" http://www.lifesaving.
ca/.
Parents and caregivers are
urged to discuss this informa-
tion with their youth.
of Trespassing.
A proper muffler and an
approved, properly fit helmet
are required by law.
Drivers of a snowmobile
directly or indirectly involved in
a reportable collision are
required to call police as soon as
possible.
A trail permit is required to use
approved snowmobile trails, when
they are declared open for use.
Dress appropriately and let
someone know where you plan
to ride and for how long.
In addition, snowmobile own-
ers are encouraged to check out
snowmobile by-laws with the
Municipality that they ride in.
Snowmobiling can be an
enjoyable winter activity. Fol-
low the rules, be respectful of
others and ride safely.
