And We are Off...
4 2015 is Under Way
Welcome to 2015 and welcome back
to winter. After a sort of green, with
shades of mud and snow residue, Christmas
we are now getting the full mixed bag from
Mother Nature with rain, freezing rain and
snow leading up to a deep freeze to get winter
under way... again.
In a way this is fitting, as many have been
awaiting the kind of weather that will bring
out the winter recreation equipment. It does
look prettier to have everything covered in
white, rather than mud. It would not be a
Huron/Bruce winter without the traditional
winter weather here to stay.
One tradition that many were happy to take
part in recently was the NewYears Day Levee
at the Lucknow Legion. There was plenty of
refreshments and refreshing camaraderie to
be had.
Another tradition is to celebrate the first
baby bom in the newyear. Congratulations
and bragging rights for the first baby bom in
2015 at the South Grey Bruce Health Centre,
what would traditionally have been called a
hospital back in the day, in Walkerton goes to
the Lucknow family of Blue and Lisa Wiens.
The Dungannon Lions are continuing their
tradition of fundraising to help support the
community with their Euchre and Darts over
the next 3 months. They have been busy pre-
paring for another Dungannon tradition,
skating and hockey in the outdoor pavilion at
the Agricultural Society grounds.
Thankyou to those who have shared their
stories, photos and reports over the year 2014.
I look forward to seeing what happens in this
newyear, both from those who have contrib-
uted either regularly or once in a while in the
past and also with those who will be first-time
submitters this year.
2015 is here and we are off and running...
Corrections
In recent editions of the Lucknow Sentinel the
following errors have been noted: the name for
the Anglican Choir at Carolfest should have
been St. Peter's Ukelele Band and Choir and the
special Deconsecration Service for St. Peter's
Anglican Church in Lucknow will be on January
17, 2015 with a snow date of January 24.

Well, here we are in 2015, a brand newyear
with a clean slate. For me, it will be probably
only a few days (if even that) before I do some-
thing silly and mess up my slate. The older I get,
the more "mistakes" I seem to make, some of
them quite stupid, that's not to say that all peo-
ple mess up more as they get older, but I cer-
tainly seem to.
The Legion as usual started 2015 off right
with their annual President's Levee. They do
such a lot of work to help around town all the
time, and they still take the time to put out a
spread of free goodies and a friendly welcome
to any members of the communitywhowishto
take part. Congratulations Branch 309 and
thanks for all you do.
I read Mike O'Neill's Christmas story with
great interest a couple of weeks ago. It reminded
me of a place near where I lived in the west end
of Toronto called St Francis' Kitchen. Agroup of
monks took over an old deserted restaurant on
Queen Street just west of Dufferin Street and

We hope that everyone hada safe and Happy
New Year celebration. Howthankful we are for
the great roads.
Our sympathy goes out to Larry Bannerman
on the loss of his wife Kathy, and to the family of
the late Bill MacPherson of Lucknow.
The Purple Grove annual pot luck and
concert to celebrate Christmas was held
December 19th at the Community Cen-
tre. Friends came from near and far for the
food, fun and fellowship, and to hear the
youngsters perform. We were pleased to have
June and Earl Elliott attend (they are a young
91); and three sets of twins to keep Santa's
memory working well. Santa even gave one
fellow a lump of coal (don't know why, I
thought he was a pretty fine fellow).
opened it up to the public. Anyone could get a
meal for $1 and it was always busy. There were
of course the monkswho ran it, as well asvolun-
teers from all over the neighbourhood (includ-
ingmyself on occasion) and alot of people who
didn't have a lot of anything. The neighbour-
hoodwasn'tthe best in Toronto (and still isn't)
but the volunteers and those who came for a
meal knew it was a place to be safe and
befriended.
This was a place where I took a friend from
Weyburn, Sask once (we grewup together near
Preston), a very nalve Presbyterian minister,
who commented on some girls standing on the
street comer. He was aghast when I said they
were "ladies of the night". But that's the kind of
neighbourhood it was and is.
This coming Friday, January 6, is Ukrainian
Christmas Eve, so I wish all of you a happy and
blessed Christmas (again).
Sympathy of the community to the families
of: Susan Alton, 71, RR 2, Aubum; Lonzo Lucas,
46, Barrie; and, Robert Barnes, 69, Petrolia (for-
merly Point Clark).
Our usual MC Heather Finnie kept the con-
cert runningsmoothly. Members of the Green-
wood and Gill families provided musical num-
bers. Marilyn Reid had a humourous reading.
Fran Farrell had great audience participation
with her 12 days of a Canuck Christmas
song. She also provided the commentary for a
Christmas gift performance. Thanks to all who
were good sports in participating for Fran. We
sang our standard song of "Here Comes Santa's
Cows" and Santa Claus (who had arrived all the
way from Goderich) had a great time handing
out gifts to all the children present
Huge thank you to Joyce Farrell and Janet
Rhody and all their families who helped with
the set up and clean up for the even-
ing. Thanks too to Doug MacDonald for pro-
viding a great tree.

On Saturday, December 27, Jack and Judy
