At the February 4, 2015
meeting of the Lucknow and
District Kinsmen their spring
project of refurbishment of
the Lucknow Tennis Courts
was approved. Lyndon John-
ston then gave a Powerpoint
presentation of the project at
the February 17 Township of
Huron -Kinloss Council meet-
ing to ask for their permission
to proceed and to ask for
some help from Council.
The Lucknow Tennis
Courts was a project origi-
nally built in 1981. Since the
fall of 2012, the club has
been planning to refurbish
the area. The area gets quite
a bit of use, but could use a
facelift. The Kinsmen plan to
put some of the monies
raised from Lucknow's
Music in the Fields into
improving the courts for the
community to enjoy.
The proposal includes
installing 12"X12" Sport Tiles
over the 120'X108' asphalt
court. New tennis nets, posts
and centre tie downs would
be added, as well as adding a
new rebounding backboard to
be installed on the north fence
for practice. An added feature
would be adjustable competi-
tion size basketball goal posts
on opposite ends of the court
and a wind screen on the
south fence. The perimeter
fence posts would be repaired
and painted with new chain
linking installed. A vehicle
barrier of posts and chain
would be placed on the east
side to prevent vehicles from
entering the access drive to
the pumphouse.
The refurbishment project
would necessitate the
removal of 3 large trees,
including stump removal,
that are causing problems
with lifting the existing
asphalt. The asphalt would
need to be cut to remove the
roots that are under the
courts. Cement footing
would be installed for tennis
net posts, net centre tie, bas-
ketball nets and tennis
rebound backboard. The
vendor would install the new
tiles and paint the required
lines on the courts.
The Kinsmen intend to do
most of the work as volun-
teers to save on labour costs.
They asked Huron -Kinloss
Council for permission to
start the work in May 2015
with the goal of having it
usable in time for the chil-
dren to enjoy it when school
lets out for the summer. The

predicted finish is to be the
end of May. Permission was
granted to begin the project
and to change the name of
the area to Lucknow Tennis
and Basketball Court.
The Huron -Kinloss Coun-
cil was asked for help with
the project. Specifically,
Huron -Kinloss Treasury is to
set up accounts and pay all
of the bills with the majority
of the funds being supplied
by the Lucknow Kinsmen to
help recoup some of the
HST. Help was asked to
finance the tree removal.
Council was also requested
to pay for the chain link to
replace the current fencing,
with the Kinsmen repairing
and painting the posts.
These requests were deemed
as doable by the Council.
Further, the Kinsmen
would like to do some land-
scaping on the grounds as
funds allow once the project
is completed. They have
asked that Council consider
paving the parking area,
some of the shoulder of the
road on the opposite side, as
well as the access road to the
pumphouse on site. It was
asked if Council could possi-
bly help to finance purchase
and planting of a substantial

The solid -core dense plastic backboard
that will be installed at the Kinsmen Tennis
and Basketball Court is a perfect surface
for singles practice with the slope and
permanent net line with the material heavy
enough to dampen sound. It is durable
enough to withstand hockey, lacrosse and
basketballs, as well.

The basketball goal posts that are to be added to the refurbished
tennis courts are adjustable from 6' to 10' with a hand crank for
easy adjustment. The base is padded to prevent injury as well as
the backboard being suspended 5' from the base to help prevent
collisions. There is a breakaway hinged rim to prevent breakage
from people hanging on it.
tree to replace the 3 that are
to be taken down. It was fur-
ther suggested that it would
be beneficial for Council to
install one LED streetlight at
the middle of the east side of
the tennis court. Council
agreed to consider these
additional requests and will
see what they can do to help
as funds become available
over time.
