Wawanosh Winter Warriors 4-H Meeting Minutes Maisy Jefferson The fourth meeting of Wawanosh Winter Warriors was held on January 24th, 2015 at the Belgrave Arena at 10:45am. The activity for this meeting was broom - ball. Members were all asked to wear running shoes and bring appropriate padding as well as a helmet. Once all members had arrived, Mary Ellen then introduced 2 potential future members who were trying out the club, as well as past members that had come for the meeting. While everyone was get- ting their broomball equip- ment on, Sarah Alexander led the 4-H pledge, which was followed by roll call. Mary Ellen Foran went over some of the rules, and showed the equipment used for broomball. Once every- one was ready to go, they grabbed a broom and the leaders grabbed the balls. Everyone then got on the ice and took a lap to get a feel for running and balancing on the ice. Next members took turns carrying the ball around pylons and shooting on the net. Members were divided into teams and Mary Ellen assigned people to positions. All participants had fun and they were glad to have 2 subs on each team for breaks. Most members saw a large improvement in their playing ability as they became more familiar with the rules and strategy and became more comfortable running on the ice. The game was over at noon and the members retired back to the dressing room for juice and cookies. For the next meet- ing, members are to meet at Benmiller Falls Reserve on Family day for snowshoeing at 10:15am. Letter to the editor More Wind Power will Increase Hydro Rates A group of councillors from a dozen Ontario municipali- ties is very disturbed at the rapidly increasing cost of electricity. They are question- ing the government's energy policy that was rushed through without adequate analysis or examination, jus- tified by an ideology rather than a comprehensive business case. They point out that our electricity has now become the most expensive in North America, seriously threatening our prosperity. And yet we are subsidizing New York and Michigan because we have to sell much of the wind energy which is available when it cannot be used, at below market prices and less than what it costs us to produce. Ina letter to the Minister of Energy, the IESO and the Auditor General, Mark Davis, Chair of the Multi -municipal Wind Turbine Working Group has called on the Ontario government and the IESO (Independent Electricity Sys- tem Operator) to drop a pro- posal to add even more wind energy to the grid. "The sky- rocketing cost of electricity is having adverse impacts on our manufacturing industry, commercial enterprise, agri- cultural viability, and many families are forced to choose between paying utility bills and buying groceries", Davis said. "We are calling on the Government of Ontario and the IESO to make a sober re- evaluation of the damage current energy policy is doing to our economy. We believe spiralling electricity costs urgently need to be halted. We are requesting full objective third -party cost -benefit analysis before there is any further procure- ment of wind or solar capac- ity", the letter states.
