Paying Tribute to
Former Correspondent
Mildred Loree Passes
Mildred Loree of Lucknow
passed away at Pinecrest
Manor on Monday, January
26, 2015 at the age of 86.
Loree was the Lucknow correspond-
ent at the Sentinel for 14 years. At the
time of her retirement, Amy Zoethout
wrote and article about Loree that was
published on January 8, 2003. The
main body of Zoethout's article is
reprinted here as a tribute to her work
for the Lucknow Sentinel.
Lucknow's correspondent Mildred
Loree is putting down her pen after 14
years of writing the local news.
"I did enjoy it," said Loree of writing
the happenings of the village for The
Lucknow Sentinel, but added it was
time for someone new to take over the
position. "I felt I was not really doing
the job now. There are so many things
going on that I am not involved in. It's
time for somebody new."
Over the years, the position as corre-
spondent has allowed Loree to talk to a
lot of different people in the village.
She said there was a lot of telephone
calls involved to get the weekly news
and she also said she received a lot of
calls with news at the last minute. One
frustrating aspect of the job, Loree
said, was hearing about events three
weeks after they happened. But on the
whole, she added that there "wasn't a
lot of work to it."
Loree said she had talked about giv-
ing up the position several times
before she actually decided to give it
up for good, but she received a lot of
encouragement from her husband to
continue writing and "every once in a
while people would say they appreci-
ated it."
Born Mildred Frances Keith on
March 13, 1929 in Kincardine, Loree
was the daughter of the late Mary
Stobo and Duncan Keith. She was the
wife of Austin Loree for 61 years.
Spring interment will be at the South
Kinloss Cemetery.
Lucknow News
Ruth Dobrensky
An era has come to an end in Luc -
know. For many years, a long time resi-
dent of Lucknow and a lovely lady
named Mildred Loree wrote the Luc -
know News for the Lucknow Sentinal.
Sadly, Mildred passed away last week at
the age of 86. Our sympathies are with
her family.
It's always good to read about people
who practice what they "preach', and so I
congratulate Anne and Suzanne Andrew
for their planned trip to Tanzania this
coming summer. Their involvement with
that worthy charity, Sleeping Children
Around the World is commendable and I
wish them every success.
It's good to see that the "younger"

The Ripley and District Agricultural
Society held their annual meeting on
January 19th with a good attend-
ance. Everyone enjoyed the special
speakers Sheila (Osborne) and Garry
Smart of Meaford. They talked about
their trip to Argentina last fall.
Joyce and John Farrell hosted a family
gathering to celebrate Elijah Nahwegah-
bow's sixth birthday. Family and friends
enjoyed celebrating with him.
The Alzheimer's Tea at "R" Villa was

organizations like the Agricultural Soci-
ety. They are trying new ways of farming,
or is it tried and tested ways, such as
Blair and Jessica Morrison are doing on
their farm outside of Lucknow. Congrat-
ulations to them on their adventurous
venture.
It's nice to see the library is keeping
the Wednesday night movies going, not
just for adults, but for the younger citi-
zens of town as well. Keep us informed
Grant so we can decide which movies we
want to go out to see.
Keep warm everyone, we've been
lucky with not having to contend with
piles of snow, but the cold has kept a lot
of us inside.
The Ripley and District Horticultural
meeting was held on January 21st at the
Ripley Legion. The annual membership
fees were collected and the year's meet-
ing schedule was handed out. The
folks attending appreciated the speaker
Dennis Bridge. Dennis spoke on nox-
ious weeds and invasive weeds in our
area.
Mary Anne Kukoly enjoyed lunch with
Marie Colling on Tuesday and also vis-
ited with Jean Colling. She took advan-
tage of the good roads to do some
visiting.
We are all hoping that the roads will
be good for Wednesday (the 4th) for the
W I meeting at Marilyn Reid's.

On January 22, there were two tables
of euchre players at the Dungannon
Senior centre. Winner to remain name-
less by request. Joe Psutka had finally
joined the ranks of seniors. He cele-
brated his 65th birthday on the 23rd of
January. Congratulations Joe.
Flippin' Eggs, a restaurant just north
of Goderich, has reopened after a month
of holidays. Many local residents stop
here for breakfasts and lunches.
Quite a few big loads of logs have been
seen heading to the sawmills in St. Hel-

Bill Stewart who passed away at his
home and the age of 87.
If you are a football fan, Sunday is the

a good one.
