Plow drivers hoping for 'soft winter' in region
Darryl Coote
Kincardine News
Here's hoping for a light
winter.
And if not for the public's
sake, then for the sake of
those who clean the roads.
"Hopefully, it's not as bad
as the last couple, especially
2013-14 was huge snowfall,"
said David Chessell, opera-
tions manager for Integrated
Maintenance and Opera-
tions Services (IMOS), which
is contracted by the Ontario
Ministry of Transportation
(MTO) to plow government
roads in its Owen Sound
area that includes
Kincardine.
"We like to have some
[snow] to keep the guys
busy," he said from the Kin-
cardine Patrol Yard off High-
way 21 where the plows are
kept. "But not that they run
off their feet."
Chessell spoke with Kin-
cardine News the Tuesday
following the area's first
snowfall of this winter sea-
son that saw between 10 cm
and 20 cm of the white pow-
der cover Kincardine's
streets.
"We got the snowfall this
weekend," he said. "But we
didn't get the amount we got
before and it didn't hang. It
quit after one day:'
Last year around the same
time he said the area had
already seen highway
closures.
Even though the first
storm of the year in Novem-
ber wasn't that severe, Ches-
sell's trucks ran from noon
the Saturday, to noon the fol-
lowing day.
"The stuff I saw off the
GPS, they were out there ...
probably 24 hours. I think
they were probably out a lit-
tle longer on [Highway] 26
between Owen Sound and
Collingwood compared to
anywhere else," he said.
For this area, the most diffi-
cult aspect of plowing is the lack
of visibility for the drivers.
"Hence the road closures,"
he said.
During what Chessell
called a "snow event," his
trucks run constantly, and
the plow operators don't
have it easy cleaning, sand-
ing and salting the roads.
"In the end ... the goal is still
the same: clean the roads,
sand, salt it. I think [the plow
operators] work very hard at
what they do. They try to do a
good job," he said.
"Winter is winter, and it's
part of the year. We know it's
a big part here. We'll be glad
for a soft winter, I'll tell you
that," he said with a laugh.
