The Huron County Dairy Produc-
ers Committee sponsor Dairy Edu-
cation Day in elementary schools
each year. Dairy Farmers of Ontario
Dairy Educator for Huron and
Bruce Counties, Annelies Ringgen-
berg, explained that this program
exists only in Ontario, with each
county having an educator
assigned to it, although some of the
approximately 50 educators cover
two counties. The educators go to
the elementary schools to talk to
students about dairy farms. The
presentations are linked to existing
school curriculum and are used to
compliment the teachings.
This year the students of Brook-
side Public School were treated to a
new approach to this program.
Denise Angst had the idea of the
program being presented at a farm
to give the students the opportunity
to see for themselves what happens
on a dairy farm. Ringgenberg
related, "Denise came to me with
the idea of doing the program on
their farm and I asked my manager.
We got the green light." This is a first
for this program.
BPS students from Kindergarten
to grade eight were divided into
three groups, each visiting the farm
for approximately 1.5 hours where
they were further divided and
rotated through three stations.
Peter and Denise Angst helped
deliver the program by personally
explaining how things worked,
nutrition needs and answering
questions. Ringgenberg supplies an
extra question and answer sheet to
the older students where the
answers spell out the statement
"Milk is delicious."
Ringgenberg and the Angst
family stated in their invitation
to BPS "It is very important to us
to give students a chance to see
how milk is produced these days
and we are very excited to offer
this opportunity to BPS students
and staff."
