HOLMSTED HOUSE
In Harpurhey, a two minute drive
from downtown Seaforth, is the
Holmsted House Bed and Breakfast,
and Tea Room. The Tea Room is
an additional service provided by
the Holmsted House to offer people
home cooked meals in an elegant
setting. The Bed and Breakfast
operates with nightly rates and
reservations are required, especially
for groups.
The meals are individually
prepared and custom dinners are
made upon request, which neces-
sitates the need for reservations.
Jean Akroyd, owner of Holmsted
House, prepares all the meals her-
self and uses only fresh foods she
purchases or grows herself.
"Everything is made fresh
everyday here," said Jean from her
kitchen. "Guests can order anything
they want here. On one day's notice
I can prepare a roast lamb or beef
dinner for a large party and offer an
elegant seting. I can prepare
anybody's favourite meal."
With individual attention like that,
it's no wonder reservations are
needed. Jean prefers her guests at
the Tea Room to calla day ahead
to reserve for dinner and lunches.
There is a small menu offered for
lunches, and everyday the lunch
menu is different. With reservations
lunches are near ready when guests
arrive and guests can take as long
as they need to savour their meals.
There are soups and sandwiches,
quiches, salads and homemade
pickles, breads and biscuits. For
dessert Jean makes fruit pies and
has been known to bake beautiful
cakes for birthdays and weddings
celebrated at the Holmsted House.
Sunday brunches are another
feature of the Holmsted House and
reservations must be made ahead.
With the Bed and Breakfast Jean
makes a full, country breakfast each
morning and offers the brunch to
non overnight guests.
Jean uses her best china for table
settings and guests will find them-
selves using antique china, crystal
and cutlery. The tables and chairs
are wood antiques with table cloths
that are lace or handstitched
embroidery. There are tables for
four and larger rooms for parties
and meetings. Jean has already a
few bookings for Christmas parties
in her dining room and has
decorated it in a Christmas theme.
The Tea Room itself is decorated to
reflect the beauty of the autumn
season.
Currently Jean is considering
obtaining a wine and beer license.
That will enable her to serve wines
to complement her dinners in the
only elegant eating establishment in
the Seaforth area.

BUSIER THAN EVER - The owners of the Walton Tea Room are certainly busy these days with the
expansion of services offered to the village. Thies and B.J. deJong run a franchise post office from their
store and also service the `supeitox' mailboxes outside the Walton Tea Room. Oxford photo.
Walton last summer as a tea room
and craft shop. Guests could enjoy
a cup of Java or a tea from a wide
selection in a cafe atmosphere, or
browse through the display of crafts
and gifts in the tea room. But,
events in the village have allowed
the owners of the Walton Tea
Room, Thies and B.J. deJong, to
expand their business.
The Walton post office, which
was located in a grocery store,
closed recently. The village was
without a post office and a grocery
store for a short time until the
deJongs decided to pick up the two
businesses and incorporate them
into their business. Now the citizens
of Walton can pick up their mail,
read it over a cup of coffee, and
buy smalLgrocery items before they
head home. The Walton Tea Room
is a very busy place to be now.
The deJongs find most of their
time is now taken up by the tea
room and then the groceries. Their
inventory has increased from, for
example, three to eight bags of milk

By taking advantage of the times
