VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
IRWIN JOHNSTON - LIONS CLUB
The Seaforth Lions Park is just one of the Seatorth Lions Club's many notable
achievements made possible by the volunteer work of Seaforth Lions and the
generous support and cooperation of the people of Seaforth They have enabled
the Seatorth Lions to assist many charities and organizations including a recent
donation of 130,000.00 to the Seaforth Community Hospital building expansion
For many years Irwin Johnston has been a member of the Seaforth Lions Club.
Irwin joined the Lions in 1971, from 1972 until 1976 he was club secretary; for
eight years chairman of the Santa Claus parade; chairman of the membership
committee for one year; Diabetes Awareness Chairman for two years under district
chairman Gord Rimmer; liaison officer in 1980 at the inception of the Seatorth
Lioness Club; and in 1989/90 Seaforth Lions Club president.
The first Lions Club was formed in Chicago in 1917. From that one acorn has
grown a mighty oak whose branches can be found in thousands of cities and towns
in many countries around the world. Though not the biggest, one of the oldest
and one of the best, is the Seaforth Lions Club, formed by a group of men in 1924,
men who wanted to give of their time and efforts to make Seaforth and some of
the world beyond better places in which to live -- and have a good time at the
same time! It is this Lions Club tradition of service which the Seaforth Lions Club
today continues, and whose valued member, Irwin Johnston, it chooses to honor
this month.
