MPP and Minister of Aviculture
announced he would ser circ

It was a gocxI decision.
Last Thursday, the New
Democratic Party (NDP) swept to
power n Ontario, including a
close victory in Huron. The Huron
Liberals, Lod by Clinton's Jim
Fitzgerald, finished a distant third.
"Everyone worked very, vary
hard. Ws one of the best cam-
paigns I've been in, but you just
can't buck the tidal wave," Mr.
Fitzgerald told supporters.
..Hopefully we'll keep all the
Liberals together and we'll be
there to fight again -- keep your
chins up."
Mr. Fitzgerald finished with
6,653 votes, while the NDP's Paul
Klopp won the riding with 10,020,
less than a 1,000 more than
Progressive Conservative (PC)
candudare Kent Campbell.
On Thursday eventing, Mr.
l itavxald and 1.isssl supporters
p_erod ui their Mew u npsigp
office to watch the results on
television. Tiny shook thou heads
w disbelief as Liberal after Liberal
fell like dominoes to the NDP
candidates across the province. !n
Huron, the election race was sup-
posed to be between the Liberals
and the PCs.
When u became appweut that
Mr. Kopp had won, Mr.
Fitzgerald headed out to
the trw Huron MPP
at

evening,Law in die Mr.
Fitzgerald said he hopss the NDP
can keep all their minim, ad-
ding that it's going to be expen-
sive.
Mr. Fitzgerald, 43, is the general
manager of the agriculture
magazine The Rural Voice. He
was also Mr. Riddell's right hand
man, when the former MPP was

SEAFORTH - The local Conser-
vatives were feeling particularly
blue last Thursday night as the
results of the provincial election
rolled in.
For the local Tories who
gathered at election headquarters
in Seaforth, the results were not
expected. Several hundred Tory
faithfuls filled the Seaforth arena
to follow the election results with
candidate Ken Campbell and
watched with surprise as the news
of the Conservative loss unfolded.
The anticipated victory party that
night took on a subdued air as
party faithfuls quietly watched the
election results come in. The
results for the Huron riding
steadily showed the New
Democratic Party NDPs in the
lead from the start, with Campbell
following in second place and the
Liberals in third.
The Tones were disappointed by
the results. Huron County is
traditionally known as a Conser-
vative riding, in spite of the fact
that a Liberal member has held a
parliamentary seat for the past 17
years. The Tones were hoping for
a comeback in Huron County with
this election. They did not an-
ticipate the results.
Campbell admitted that he had
no sense of the NDP majority win
prior to the election. He noted,
-"The NDP win came as a big
surprise."
He had not counted on NDP
candidate Paul Klopp as his main
competition in the local election.
Campbell said that he believed
Jim Fitzgerald of the Liberal party
was his primary opponent for the
Huron riding. He said that
Fitzgerald had run a good cam-
paign and he had done "a lot of
handshaking."
In his closing speech to Tory
followers, Campbell noted, "The
sling of the electorate has effected
Huron County. We didn't know
who our enemy was."
Ken Campbell, a 55 -year-old
McKillop Township farmer and
business man, was seen as a
strong contender for the election
nod in Huron County.
As he watched the results come
in, Campbell said of his campaign,
"We gave it a good shot. There's
no way you can counter a vote
like that."
He added, "You can't tell what's
going on when you're on the
campaign trail."
Ken Campbell found some con-
solation in the election results in
the fact that he won his local polls
in Seaforth and McKillop
Township.
The biggest surprise in the poll
results, he said, came from

Goderich, where the NDP party
won by a large majority.
Campbell reasoned that a majority
of Goderich voters are working
class people and union members,
who support the NDP cause.
The Tory candidate offered little
comment on the future of the the
province with an NDP government
at the helm. His only response
was a negative shake of his head.
To the audience at the election
headquarters he offered, "We'll
probably live through this."
He added, "But I did want to go
to Queen's Park. I really wanted
to go.
Campbell did not wait in
Seaforth to get the final tally. He
headed out to NDP election head-
quarters in Holmesville to
congratulate the winner. Before
going, Ken Campbell reminded
his fellow Conservatives, "We're
not at a wake, we're at a party.
It's not a victory party, but it's the
second best thing."
