He would then be able to just throw
the contents of the containers into
the appropriate comptuunent of his
truck.
"I guess the problem with a
recycling program using pails is
that there's no grant money
available for pails," reasoned Jerry.
"People have been conditioned to
think of blue boxes when they think
of recycling."
Grants available to municipalities
starting a recycling program pay
two-thirds the cost of blue boxes
and it's up to the municipality how
to recover the other third. A town
could charge each resident the
difference or make a tax hike to
recover costs. McKillop offers blue

Sure I've heard horror stories
about some nursing and retirement
homes. I've also heard of abused
parents and grandparents at home
with families who can no longer
cope and of senior citizens who sit
alone and lonely all day with their
only contact to the outside world
being their homecare worker. I
firmly believe that there is a place
for all of us out there and that
families and seniors need to take
the time to explore and decide what

be increased to the point where

a full-time job.
If sitting on County Council
becomes a profession, the salary
will have to be adjusted according
ro tine pay equity legislation. Surely
a councillor ropresenung 4,000

is Mew Toronto. Can we afford
this?
If being a councillor becomes a
full -nine job, we will lose the input
boxes to its residents and the boxes
were free because McKillop -Grey
townships are a pilot project in
rural recycling. Clinton has adopted
the blue box system and the town is
paying the cat of each box over
what is paid for by grants. Jerry
would have to sell his pails for
about S2 apiece.
While Seaforth council looks into
recycling programs and grants,
Jerry will continue to offer
recycling services to interested
residents. Jerry says he will submit
a proposal to council on recycling.
The 300 white pails Jerry has sit
waiting to be used as recycling
containers. To make the pails a
symbol of recycling in Seaforth
is best for them without being
pushed into a decision by
politicians.
I agree that our seniors deserve
dignity, security and quality care
but I feel they should also have the
right to decide how they wish to
live and should be granted funding
to assist them in their choice. If
they are old enough to vote are they
not hold enough to decide the lifes-
tyle best suited to their needs and
have the same rights to adequate
funding as those who choose to be
at home? Yours Sincerely

could you era be a fanner if you
hada full-time job being a council-

municipal council, who will protect
rural wiles such as the right to

Are there any other counties in

suggested having a contest for
school children to design a logo. He
said he could approach the Boy
Scouts and Girl Guides or other
service group to get the pails
painted and ready for use.
"1'm willing to work with council,
providing they get a direction,"
Jerry said. "I'll continue to do the
pick-up of recyclables when council
gets recycling. I'm not complaining
about anything; it's just that as the
private individual that picks up the
garbage, I can see the inefficiency
of a blue box system."

I don't know whether this plan is
all good or all bad. Perhaps there
are parts of it that might bring real
benefits in a society that is char
ging rapidly, even in Huron. But 1
believe we should question our
candidates w get a clear understan-

before the election. We should also
take advantage of the opportunity to
let the poliucal parties know the
conditions we wish to keep in
Huron County.
