Merchants fastball team tastes tournament action defeat Despite a good effort, the Seaforth Merchants were unsuc- cessful in their attempt to win a ball game this week. The Merchants lost 5-2 to Kincardine in regular league action on Thursday, then lost 11-0 and 10-0 to Orangeville and Wyoming in tournament action on the weekend. "Thursday's game in Kincardine was a really good ball game," said coach Marc Robinet. '"rine Murata (Dave Akcy) did a great job on the hill, and we had come good scoring chances, but we just couldn't come up with a hit when we needed one. As far as tournament action goes, we played flat out terrible - no offense, no defence, and very little pitching." Squirts taste victory, Peewees take to field On Thursday, June 28 the Squirt II team from St. Columban travelled to Arva, and came home with a 2-1 victory for the locals. Jason Ansteu brought in both goals for St. Columban. The Squirt II's played a great game, with good passing. Arva had two good chances at penalty shots but were denied them by St. Columban's netminder Brad Mur- ray. The PeeWee I's took on the PeeWee's II's in in-house action last week in St. Columban, and the II's came out on top with a 3-2 win. Scoring for the II's were Janice Rodney, Jamie Stapleton and Bill Ryan, while the I's goals came from Mike Watt and Jason Hender- son. This was a good practice for both teams, and well -played. "You can't drive to a tournament, put on your ball uniform and cleats, and expect to win. You have to be pumped up mentally as well as physically, and you can see by the score that we weren't." Both tournament games were short ones for Seaforth, ending with the mercy rule after five innings. ORANGEVILLE 11 - SEAFORTH 0 In the first game against Oran- geville, Doug Discopelo, Del Mitchelmore and Marty Bedard were pitchers in the losing effort. They allowed a total of 11 runs on 11 hits, walked one player and struck out one. Orangeville scored two runs in the third inning, then nine in the fourth to take the win. Hitters for Seaforth were Bill Matetich (1), Rick Boon (1) and Bedard (1). WYOMING 10 - SEAFORTH 0 Boon pitched four and two-thirds innings for the Merchants in game number two against Wyoming. He allowed 10 runs on nine hits, and struck out four players. Matetich finished up on the mound and al- lowed no runs on one hit. He walked one player and struck out one. Wyoming scored one run in the first inning, four in the second and five in the fifth to take the win. Seaforth scored no runs but got hits from Matetich (2) and Bill Dale (1). LEAGUE ACTION League action earlier in the week prompted better play from Seaforth, although it resulted in a loss. Dave Akey pitched eight innings for the Merchants in that game, and allowed only five runs on eight tuts. He walked eight batters and struck out seven. Seaforth scored first in this game in the fourth inning. Matetich walked at that time, went to second on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI double by Akcy. Kincardine quickly tied the game in the bottom of the same inning to make the score 1-1 after four. Kin- cardine scored three more times in the fifth and once more in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. Seaforth scored one run in the ninth inning when Akey doubled, then scored on a single by Del Mitchelmore.
