A number of local papers report dis-

new assessment act. There is no reason
why farmers should be dissatisfied with
the change. Assessors are now expected
to value farms at their actual value, but
if this brings the assessment higher than
formerly the rate on the dollar will bo

There were 17 bodies interred in the
Kincardine cemetery during last year.
Mr. John Drummond, at one time a
resident of Clinton, died in Chatham ou
March 28th. Creeping paralysis was the
cause of his death. Deceased moved
from Clinton to Blyth -some years ago,
and shoved to Chatham with Ms wife last
September.

A well-known and highly respected
resident of Ashfield has passed away in
the person of Kenneth McKenzie, post-
master at Lothian, who died after an
operation in the hospital at Detroit. Mr.
McKenzie had been postmaster at Loth-
ian since the opening of the office there
and was well-known in the northern
part of the county. Ile leaves a widow
and several children,
Mr. Robt. McMordie, of Kippen, has
sold his fine farm on the London road, to
a gentleman from Montreal, for $9,000
cash, and gives up possession on the 1st
of May. It is one of the choicest farms
in the county. Mr. McMordie intends
moving to London. He has resided in
the neighborhood of Kippeu for 55 years
and it will be hard for him to leave the
old home and its associations.

lst of July next auu the inhabitants in-

terns. For a square or rectangular cis-
tern multiply the length, breadth and
depth together ;then multiply this by 19
and divide by 80. If it is a circular cis-

There is said to be a shortage of from
20 to 80 per cent in the number of winter
fed cattle that will be ready for export
in May. The shortage is reported from
Wellington, Middlesex and others of the
principal beef counties of Ontario In

at high noon at Fair View, Lucknow,the
residence of Mr. P. McMillan, on Wed-
nesday, April 5th, when his sister Miss
Jessie was united in the bonds of matri-
mony to Captain A. McInnis of the
Steamer Juno, Windsor, Promptly at
11 o'clock to the sweet strains of the Me-
Morran Orchestra, the groom supported
by his brother, Mr. Angus McInnis,
Detroit, walked into the room and was
immediately followed by the bridesmaid
Miss Annie Douglas and the bride lean-
ing on the arm of her brother. The cer-
emony was performed by Rev. D. T. L.
McKerrol, of the Presbyterian Church,
Lucknow, assisted by Rev. A. McGilli-
vray, of Chatham, cousin of the groom.

Some weeks ago we reported tho death
and funeral of Francis Clelland a former
resident of the Atli con. of Culross. And
tide week wo have to mention the de-
parture of his wife whose death occurred
on Friday, April 7th. Mr. Clelland had
reached the ago of 76 years and 11
Months. Flis wife died at the age of 0G
years and 2 months,
Galt Reformer: John McOormiok,
farmer of Killeen, owns five ewes which

lifioacy. Six weeks ago these five ewes
gave birth to 17 lambs, 16 of which are
now alive and thriving. Three of the
ewes gave birth to three lambs each, and
two of them to four each. These lambs
are a cross between Leicester and Shrop-
shire.

A company of twenty C.P.R. survey-
ors arrived in Walkerton last week with
instructions to survey a line from the
County Towu to Flesherton, This looks
as though the Company means business
and that a line connecting Flesherton or
some other station on the Owen Sound
branch, with Walkerton, Teeswator,
Lucknow and a lake port will bo built in
the near future. In addition to the ad-
vantage of a second railroad the people
of Walkerton expect that the Grand
Trunk will be obliged through compe-
tition to move its station down town.
Mr. John Smith, au old and respected
resident of Seaforth, departed this life
on Sunday morning April 9th. Mr.
Smith had not been enjoying his usual
good health for the past winter, but was
able to attend to his usual duties until
two weeks ago last Sunday, when he
war prostrated by an attack of paraly-
sis, which rendered. him completely
helpless and from which he never rallied.
Mr. Smith was 68 years of age. He
came to Canada with his parents about
fifty years ago. They first settled in
Galt, remaining there about two Vara,
when they came to Huron, and lived in

On Saturday morning, April 8th, Mrs.
Voile, beloved wife of Mr. Steven Velie,
passed away at the family residence,
Blake street, Listowel, aged 64 years.
The deceased, whose maiden name was
Mary Ann Hood, was born at
Whiteehuroh, near Newmarket, in 1841.
She came with her parents to the Queen's
Bush, Marlborough, when eight years
old, and married Mr. Steven Velie in
1859. Mr. and Mrs. Velie continued to
reside in Marlborough until four years
ago, when they retired from farming
and removed to Lietowel.
A young man' who expects to succeed
in business will have to look more
