Centenaires open new season
BY PATRICK RAFTLS
The Seaforth Centenaires opened the
1986-87 Junior D hockey campaign on the
weekend, sporting only a handful of return-
ees from last year's All -Ontario champion-
ship squad, Despite the rookie -laden lineup,
the team managed a split in two games,.
winning the season opener 11-5 in Clinton,
against the Mustangs, Friday night, then
dropping their home opener Sunday, after-
noon by a 5-2 margin against a touch-eheck-
ing Belmont Bombers squad.
Centenaire rookie coachDratherthaAnstena
said the calibre of the opponent,
change in the way the Centenaires played in
the two games, accounted for the differing
results.
"W e got pressed a little more today," he
said, after the Belmont game. Anstett said
inexperience, especially on defence, could
give the Centenaires some problems in the
early going.
The only experienced Centenaires on the
blueline are Gerard Ryan and Barry Camp-
bell, and Campbell is expected to miss some
of the early -season games because of school
commitments.
"We're hoping Barry and Gerard can
anchor our defence," said Anstett. who
Veteran centreman Jerry Wright,
picked up eight points on the weekend, has
been named team captain by the coaching
staff and should provide a good example for
the new players,
Other returnees include high -scoring for-
ward Kevin Melady, tugged winger Kevin
W illiamson and tough -checking Bill Dale.
Speedy forward Mike Betties has also
returned to the team, after a tryout with the
Junior 13 St. Marys Lincolns,
The Centenaires appear solid in goal, with
Ray Anstett, who saw some action with the
team last year, and newcomer Todd Camp-
bell, of the St. Marys Midgets, expected to
share the netminding duties.
Other rookies showing some promise are
Tim Campbell, Spence Rolland and Joe
Weston, all from St. Marys and a number of
Midget -age players from Seaforth.
Mike Schoonderwoerd, Joe Smith, Ron
Pryce, Brad Beutlenmiller, Steve Schroeder,
Brian Dupuis and Darren Akey, all eligible to
play for the Seaforth Midgets, saw action
over the weekend.
Anstett, and assistant coach Keith Mc-
Clure, believe the rookies will fit in well, once
they adjust to the pace of Junior D play.
"They'll get better every game," said
Anstett.
It's quite a step up from Midget.
Especially the pace -- and the forechecking,"
said McClure.
The coaches are attempting to implement a
defensive system with a heavy emphasis on
hackchecking, to lift some of the burden off
the green defensive corps,
Anstett said this year would be basically a
rebuilding year.
•We're using everybody; just looking to
give these kids some experience," he said,
adding the league appears to be well-bal-
anced this year and he expects every game to
he "a dogfight.•' Still, there is room for
optimism.
"1 don't think winning our division is out of
the question." said McClure, adding that
anything can happen a the playoffs.
