Rules make go Ping difficult
l
ON TIE GREENS
by Carolanne Doig
I've decided to take up tennis, or even
fiddly winks. I came to this decision early last
week while writing the Canadian Ladies Golf
Association's three hour plus rules exam.
After 2'2 full days of clause by clause
discussion and explanation of the rule book
my head was pounding. i wasn't alone. There
were 45 other ladies from Ontario, Quebec
and the Maritimes all frantically trying to
recall if it was a one stroke penalty or two, if
you redropped the ball or replaced it, if it was
this or that.
The questions were multiple choice but
sometimes I wanted to add extra answers.
For instance in one question a lady hit her ball
into a lateral water hazard, dropped it
incorrectly, played the ball, changed her
mind (just like a woman) redropped and
played out the hole. The question asked what
her score was for the hole. I was tempted to
answer, "who cares, she should go into the
clubhouse for a coffee!"
There were 50 questions without the
rulebook, and 50 questions with the rulebook.
It is no longer just a matter of teeing off,
playing the ball where it lies, counting your
strokes and adding them up at the end of each
hole. You just about need to be a lawyer to
interpret the rules and understand the
decisions book. I never even knew there was a
decisions book. It is a large three ring binder
compiling all controversial decisions regard -
