Speaking contest held
LEGION
NEWS
BY GORDON SCOTT, PRO
On Sunday afternoon past the Branch held
their annual Public Speaking Contest. There
were 20 entries from local schools. The
winner from the high school goes right into
the Zone contest in March.
Youth chairman, Tom Wilbee said all
entries this year were of a very high calibre.
All entrants were thanked for their enthusi-
asm and hard work. The winners in the
various divisions were as follows: Melanie
Segeren, Grade 6, St. James School,
Seaforth ; runner up, Michelle Murray, Grade
5-6, Seaforth Public School; Terry Kelly,
Grade 7-8, St. Columban School; and runner
up, Shelly Nigh, Grade 7-8 St. James School,
Seaforth. Congratulations.
Last Saturday afternoon the Legion and
Auxiliary sponsored a mystery bus tour which
called in at the Clinton, Blyth, Luclmow,
W ingham and Brussels branches, This, was
the first adventure of its kind for Seaforth,
although the local branch has hosted
different branches in the past that have
visited. them..The bus was full with about 40
members and wives taking part\ In every
Branch Seaforth was cordially welcomed and
friendships rekindled. The different branch
members usually only meet at Zone and
District meetings, Maybe m the near future
there could possibly be another tour to other
Branches.
Monday night of last week saw four tables
of cribbage players present. Comrade Mel
Melanson has been in charge of this and in as
much as the response has been good, there is
room for a few more players. Men and women
members are both welcome Monday, Febru-
ary25 at 8 p.m. The stag euchres are proving
very popular this winter again with nine
tables in play as a rule. There is another one
tonight (Wednesday) at 8 p.m. sharp.
Darts will resume Saturday at 7 p.m.
Unfortunately there is always more than one
activity held on a,Saturday which requires a
lot of cooperation between parties. So far
everybody has cooperated in the past and it is
hoped this will continue in the future as well.
Thanks to Ann and Roger for running the
darts when the regulars weren't there,
On March 8 the entertainment committee
is planning a beef barbecue with a dance to
follow to the music of "The Country
Companions,"
The monthly meeting for February will be
held Thursday at 8 p.m. There will be a draw
for a Diamond Jubilee coin.
Brotherhood Night is being held in the
Branch on February 27 under the auspices of
the Local Britannia Lodge. Dinner will at 7
p.m. with entertainment to follow.
The Branch was sorry to hear of the death
of Veteran Jim Cleary. Comrade Cleary was a
past member of Seaforth Branch and a native
of Seaforth. He received his education in the
local schools, To his many friends and
relatives sincere sympathies in their loss.
They grow not old as we that are left grow
old. Age shall not weary them nor the years
condemn. At the going down of the sun and in
the morning we will remember them.
Top 'math students compete
BYCHERRYLSMITH
Every year students at Seaforth District
High School have the opportunity to compare
their mathematical skills with thousands of
other students across Canada and around the
world. They are able to practice types of math
not taken in regular classes and participate in
a number of math contests. These contests
are useful in making university and college
applications more appealing.
Members of the Junior Math Club in
Seaforth wrote a test prepared by the
Canadian Mathematics Association. which is

Approximately 47,000 students across Can-
ada take the test annually. There are three
different tests for students in Grades nine, 10
and 11. Last year Jane Papple placed on the
District Honor Roll.
The Senior math contest is prepared by the
Mathematical Association of America. It is
written by students across the United States,
Canada and Westem Europe. The contest is
scheduled to be written on February 25 by
approximately 10 students. The top student
in. the school will receive a pin.
