School board meetings could become tense
over the next few months.
And it won't be over any controversial
issues, but some trustees of the Huron
County board of education could start biting
their nails as they will only have 10.minutes of
every hour• to smoke a cigarette,
At its February 3 meeting, the school board
followed a growing trend• and decided it
would request its members to not smoke
during the meeting. However, for each hour
of the meeting there will be a 10 minute break
"for the personal comfort of members."
This doesn't mean trustees will be
cramming the washrooms of the board office,
but a room adjacent to the board room has
been set aside for smoking.
' There was a lot bf kidding at the meeting
and trustee John Elliott jokingly called for a
Minute of silence.
Although taking a stand for board
meetings, the trustees decided to leave
things as they are in the schools. That is, that
there be a designated smoking area.
Trustee Joan Vanden Broeck, a smoker and
member of the executive committee which
recommended the change, said the decision
was made by a committee that is predomi-
nantly smokers.
"I thought that should be noted," she
commented.
During the break, which dragged on for 20
minutes, trustees congregated in the adja-
cent room. A blue haze soon filled the air.
