Juniors in stretch drive
The Seaforth Centenaires have been
screaming down the stretch drive, with four
straight wins last week, including three wins
in three days at home on the weekend.
SEAFORTH 1s, MITCHELL4
The Centenaires played as though the
Mitchell Hawks weren't even on the ice, in a
lopsided February 4 contest, which ended
with the Centenaires winning 15-4.
The short-staffed Hawks managed to offer
only a token offense, as they fired a grand
total of 15 shots at Seaforth netminders Derek
Cooper and Trevor Fortune. Mitchell goal -
tender Jim Harley is probably still shaking
his head about the sante, in which he made 46
saves, despite allowing 15 pucks past him.
Almost all the Centenaires contributed to
the scoring summary, most notably: Kevin
W illiamson, with four goals and one assist,
Jerry Wright, with three goals and five
assists and Dave Murray, with a nine -point
night, on two goals and seven assists.
SEAFORTH 7, MITCHELL2
Mitchell came up with an improyed
defensive effort on Seaforth ice on February
7, but still lost 7-2 to the Centenaires.
Seaforth built up a three -goal lead in the
first period and outscored the Hawks 3-2 in
the second frame. Seaforth added one more
goal in the third period.
Jerry Wright scored a hat -trick and added
an assist. Pete Bennett, Kevin Melady, Dave
Akey and Dan Wesenberg also scored for
Seaforth.
SEAFORTH 8 HOW ICK 6
Seaforth kept rolling Saturday, February 8,
with an 8-6 win over Howick in Seaforth.
Seaforth had to be sharp to win this game,
as the teams emerged with a 4-4 tie after one
period of play. Ser •ah outscored Howick 2-1
in each of the next two frames to complete the
victory,
Another hat trick for Jerry Wright, who
added two assists, led the Seaforth scoring
tally. Tom Turner, Dave Murray, Kevin
W illiamson and Kevin Melady added singles.
Murray also assisted on five of the goals.
Keith McClure replaced Derek Cooper in
goal after the second period. Cooper made 26
saves, while McClure made 18. Howick's Pat
Chambers stopped 48 pucks..
SEAFORTH 7, BRUSSELS 4
A 7-4 win over the Brussels Bulls
completed the weekend sweep for Seaforth.
Seaforth racked up their goals in the early
going, out -scoring Brussels 7-4 altogetherin
the first two periods, then allowing the Bulls
only two more of their own in the third frame.
Kevin Melady led the Seaforth scorers,
with two goals and one assist. Mark
Stapleton, Darrell O'Connell, Jerry Wright,
Dan Wesenberg and Dave Murray scored
singles.
Keith McClure blocked 38 shots for the
victors.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Although the Centenaires still have two
regular season games remaining, the team's
victory Friday night ensured them of a first
place finish in their division of the OHA
Western Junior D League.
The playoffs begin February 21, with the
Centenaires at home to the Clinton Mus-
tangs, in the first game of a double
round-robin series which includes Seaforth,
Clinton, Brussels, Grand Valley and Tavi-
stock. The two top teams in the round-robin
will play a best -of -seven series to determine
who will advance to the next level of OHA
competition.
