COVERING THE ANGLE - Seaforth Petite Ringette team recently has a clear chance at the Seaforth net, but the Sea orthRafagerhoto

potential for greatness
Ringette has
Always one of the least recognized winter
sports, ringette, is growing in Seaforth, and
may even have the capacity for greatness -
some day.
A relatively new game, ringette, was first
started in Seaforth in the mid 1970s by the
then recreation director Clive Buist, But the
ringette as it was then, was somewhat
different than it is today, and probably than it
will be even tomorrow.
"It's still changing," said Marg Dale, a
local coach and ringette enthusiast.
"It's a good sport, but the ringette
association is trying to make it more of a
spectator sport, so make changes every
year."
One of the changes Ms. Dale noted
specifically was the extended zone put into
effect this year, In the past forwards could not
retreat past their own blue line and defense
could not advance past their opponents blue
line. That sometimes resulted in a frustrating
situation for the players who often were
within easy reach of the ring, but separated
from it by the blue line. This year the line was
extended to the top of the goal crease,
"The kids really loved it because it
involved more play," said Ms. Dale, "but the
referees didn't, so it won't be in effect next
year. So they really are trying' different
things."
Other changes in the game of ringette have
stemmed around the use of equipment.
W hen ringette first began girls dressed
themselves in their jeans and sweaters,
donned figure skates and carried hockey
sticks (minus the blades) onto the ice. Today
there are specific sticks designed expressly

for ringette. Players wear boys skates, elbow
pads, helmets, and even in some cases, knee
and shin pads. They have substituted sweat
pants for jeans in most cases.
"It's a tougher sport now than it was. Kids
are skating harder, and the harder you skate
the harder you fall," said Ms, Dale.
Al present the Seaforth Ringette Associa-
players coming from a particular town,
somet imes has an effect. For example a "("'
team could be forced into a "B" league for
competitive reasons. It is, according to Ms.
Dale, a hope for Seaforth Ringette officials
someday Seaforth will be able to support a
"B" team.
"If the calibre keeps going the way it is we
