The December meeting of the Hibbert
United Church Women, began with a time
of worship led by Valerie Scott and
Dorothy Dow, using Christmas as their
theme;
Guest speaker Murray Christie discuss-
ed the qualitiesand uses of the wood grown
from various'natirle trees and illustrated
his talk with a sample of each type as well
as. several examples of hisown hand
crafted wooden articles.
The business portion of the gathering;
chaired by Margaret Christie, included
plans for the Christmas Sunday birthday
cake, a decision to send the collected pen-
nies to "Seeds for Zaire" once again, and
to make a further donation to the Mission
and Service Fund.
All enjoyed a social time over a festive
lunch served by hostesses Elizabeth and
Gwen Harburn.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The Staffa Women's insitute members
catered to the Hibbert Township
Christmas dinner on Thursday evening in
the township hall.
Joyce Vivian hosted the Christmas
meeting of the Staffa Women's Institute at
her home in Mitchell on Wednesday even-
ing. It began with a potluck dinner follow-
ed by the guest speaker for the evening,
Reverend Donald Pletsch.
Rev. Pletsch told members about his
nine years spent in Africa, in an area call-
ed "the town of ants". He described how
his family celebrated its first and follow-
ing Christmases in Africa and how the
native people celebrated the Christmas
season. Rev. Pletsch was introduced and
thanked by Kay Smale..
Mrs. Smale presided for the program.
Roberta Templeman read a poem on
Christmas. Members answered the roll
call with some reminiscing, as they told
about a Christmas `song they had learned
in school.
Mrs. Templeman presided for the
business porrtio�n with Freda Kerslake
reading the minutes in the absence of the
secretary, Verle Mahon. The financial
statement was given by the treasurer Mrs.
Sinale.
Marjorie Drake and Doris Miller
repotted on the Christmas dinner served
the previous evening to Hibbert township.
Freda Kerslake was appointed to sit on
the township committee for the display

from the Weavering Women's Insitute in
Kent, England was displayed. Mrs.

celebrating the 85th anniversary of the
Staffa Women's Institute in 1988.
The meeting closes with a prayer taken
from the ACWW Countrywoman, then
secret plans were revealed and gifts ex -
charged. Joyce served Christmas goodies,
and coffee.

The annual Christmas Ladies' Night spon-
sored by the Father Stephen Eckert Council,
Knights of Columbus of 'Seaforth and
District was well attended en Thursday,
December 17, in the Council rooms at St.
Columban.
. The general meeting took place early.
Following the meeting a social was held
with music being supplied by the Town and
Country group under the direction of Ivin
Norris of Staffa, Santa Claus was present
and distributed gifts to the ladies. Lynn
Stapleton, Dublin, Queen representative for
the Seaforth Fall Fair gave her address and
was presented with a cheque by the Deputy
Grand Knight, Frank Crowley.

in charge of District Deputy, Rene Brochu
assisted by Past Grand Knight„ Morley
Lecking of Goderich. The winners were: 1st,

Maloney, Dublin and Jean Eckert, Dublin.
