Madonna's younger sister Carol Ann was

$50 from the Western Ontario Conservatory
of Music.
Madonna has been a participant in the
conservatory's scholarship programme and
was recently the recipient of the John
Labatt Ltd. Scholarship of $100, at t'he..
Canada Music Week Festival. The money is
.. to be applied to further tuition, or to help
with the costs of attending the Provincials.
Madonna's final concert was held in the,
auditorium at Mount St. Joseph, London.
Women's Institute holds potluck dinner
The Seaforth Women's Institute held its
December meeting at the Orange Hall, star-
ting with a potluck dinner. A short program
followed in which The Huron Strings played
several old time tunes. Helen MacKenzie
read "Experience with a Refractory Cow",
a skit "Who Took The Pie" was performed
by Olive Papple and Jean Keys, followed by
a.reading by Marion Gordon "Sixty-five and
Counting"
The Huron' Strings then played
several Christmas Carols and everyone
joined..in_the-singing
The rest of the evening was spent playing
progressive euchre. Ladies. first Marjorie
Rock, low, Ethel Kerr. Men's first, Gordon
Papple, low Sam Scott, travelling lone hand,
Dorothy McCltiskie. Lucky tally. Sarah
Elliott. and Stanley Mien. Most grand-

The Seaforth Junior Farmers recently
held their December meeting at the
Seaforth and District Community Centres.
The Seaforth Junior Farmers will be singing
Christmas Carols in Seaforth on Monday,
December 21. A Senior's Card Party is also
planned in the month of January.
Nancy Denham, culture Committee
Chairperson gave a report on the singswing
held in Simcoe ori November 28. The Huron
County old time Square Dance team placed
third out of several clubs. Those members
from the Seaforth club were Janice Murray,
Warren Wray, Dianne Van Vliet.
The Zone Winter Games were held in
Wingham on December 12. The mixed curl-
ing team, consisting of John Van Vliet,
Dianne Van Vliet, Nancy Denham, and
Bryan Vincent place first in the zone. The
Ladies Bowling team also placed first in the
Zone with those from the Seaforth Club in-
cluding Janice Murray, Dianne Van Vliet,
Sandra Regele, Linda Feagan and Muriel
Taylor. These teams now have the oppor-
tunity to attend the Provincial Winter
Games in Temiskaming in February 1988.
A representative from the Survival
Through Friendship House, (a home for bat-
tered women) Goderich attended the
meeting and gave a very interesting speech
about the home. Earlier this fall the
Seaforth club donated food from its club
Garden "Plant a Seed for Need" to this
home.
The Club Executive for 1988 is: President -
Paul Hoggarth; Vice -President - Warren
Wray; Treasurer - Warren Wray; Secretary
PEOPLE
Paul Doig will be staying at Maplewood
Manor over Christmas, arriving 'there on
December 22. Anyone wishing to visit him
will be most welcome. Mr. Doig will be 88
this month,
Mrs. Terry Ward of Monkton and Mrs.
Bryan McClure and Amy of RR 2 Seaforth
vsited on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Nor-
man Hubley.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Preszcator of
Crediton spent last Sunday and Monday
with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hubley.
Ross Leeming of Seaforth is a.patient in
London's Victoria Hospital. He is wished a
speedy recovery.

Brodhagen spent the weekend with Amy
McCLure.

Caitlin Amber, born on December 6, 1987 at
Clinton Public Hospital, weighing 7 lbs., 81/2
ozs. A sister for Bear. Proud grandparents

and Herb and Hazel Harrison, Seaforth.
PECKITT - Tom and Diane are pleased to
announce the safe arrival of their son
Thomas Lorne, born on December 4
weighing 8 lbs., 11 oz. at Stratford General
Hospital. A little brother,for Adrienne and
Danielle. Proud grandparents are John
Peckitt, Clinton; Joyce Peckitt, Lucan and
Joe and Ann Van Dooren, Seaforth.
SARARAS - Gary and Gail Sararas are hap-
py to announce the arrival of Joseph Patrick
on December 7, 1987 at St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, weighing 1I lbs., 9 ozs. A
baby brother for Jill, Jeff and Laura. Proud'
grandparents are Joe and Helen Nolan, St.
Columban and Ross and Grace Sararas,
Exeter.
WILLIAM'I,'HORN1'ON MUSTARD
Dr. William Thornton Mustard, the
Toronto Children's heart surgeon famous
for pioneering techniques that saved the
lives of thousands, died Friday,
December 11, 1987 in Naples, Florida.
Dr. Mustard, who had a history of
heart problems, became ill last Monday,
a week after going to Florida for the
winter.
Born in Brucefield, Dr. Mustard at-
tended the University of Toronto Schools
and the University of Toronto, earning
his MD fn 1937 at the age of 22, the
youngest graduate at that time.
As a major in the Canadian Army
Medical Corps overseas from 1942 to
1945, he used a new drug to prevent clot-
ting, developed at Connaught
Laboratories, and inserted glass tubes
inside the arteries of badly wounded ser-
vicemen to save their limbs from
amputation,
The breakthrough , made him a
Member of the Order of the British
Empire.
Dr. Mustard spent 29 years at
Toroniv s ospOrfiWick-Children,-and
retired in 1976. In 1952 he develped the il-
iopsoas muscle transfer for polio victims
whose hips, were paralyzed. Known. as
the Mustard Procedure; it became -wide-
ly accepted and performed around the
world.
The same year as part of a Toronto
team of eight, he used an artifical heart
and a monkey's lung to keep babies alive
while their hearts were under surgery.
He received worldwide .acclaim again
in 1963 for the Mustard Operation - cor-
recting the transposition of the great
blood vessels to and from the heart. -
In 1976 he won the Gairdner Interna-
tional Award, considered second only to
the Nobel Prize. The following year he
was created an officer of the Order 'of
Canada.
Dr. Mustard was co-editor of the Tex-
tbook of Pediatric Surgery, co-author of
Advances in Surgery, author of hundreds
of articles, a guest lecturer and visiting
professor and the trainer of scores of car-
diac surgeons. •
Funeral arrangements were unknown
at press time. ,
EDNA MABEL BUTT
Edna Mabel Butt of Center Street,
Seaforth, died Thursday, December 10, 1987
at the Seaforth Community 'Hospital. She
was 80.
The former Edna Stewart she was a
daughter of the late William Stewart and the
former Annie Catherine Hill. On July 8, 1933
she married Roy A. Butt.
She is survived by four daughters,
Marilyn (Mrs. Gilbert Lodge) of Green-
wood, Nova Scotia, Karen (Mrs. Allen Ged-
des) of Seaforth, Brenda (Mrs. Peter Dale)
of Stratford, Linda (Mrs. Wayne. Reid of
llensall and one soli Murray and his wife
Frances of Stratford.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and
10 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Butt was predeceased by her hus-
band and by two sons, Stewart and Keith
Butt, and by three sisters, Mildred (Mrs.
Charles Pope) and Ida and Mary Stewart.
A funeral service was held . Monday,
December 14, 1987 at the • Box Funeral
Chapel, Seaforth, with the Reverend James
Vanslyke officiating. Interment Maitland
Bank Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Brian Ged-
des, Clayton Geddes, Daniel Butt, Wayne
Butt, Steven Butt and James Reid.
Flower bearers were grandsons, Jeff Ged-
des, Kevin Butt and David Geddes.
