HOW DO I BREAK THE
NEWS OF 'DEATH?
Most people hate to be the bearers of
sad tidings especially the tidings of
death, actual or impending But the
"bad news=bruiger" can actusily do
great good by making sure that the
receiver of the news will have the sup='
port he or she needs to bear and express
the feelings of shock, loss and sadness.
Evers for persons who are not very erne-
tionally'expressive, it is important for
them to feel that they are with people.
who will be supportive when they
,receive such news.
Such support conies in the form of total
listen
listening and acceptance., This means
appfeciatin'g the full human beauty of the
bereaved person even as his face is con,
torted with distress and tears. ft does not
mean trying to "calm" or "reassure"
him or otherwise tum off his expressions
of feeling.
An attitude of attentive 'listening,
physical touching' or embbace are more
important than your exact choice of
words. Indeed, if you are in touch with
your own feelings, you' will find the right
words. A simple 'I'm sorry- backed by
genuine feeling wilt be more eupportfve
than lengthy praise di the deoeased.
And remember - you can go en giving .
support well past the funeral mourning
period. That may be when yo'u'Ve need-
ed the most.
