fying cost."
That problem could get bigger if one' of
the five county detachments should, with
approval from the Solicitor General opt for
OPP coverage rather than that of a local
detachment. The five towns currently share
the cost of the communications system.
Seaforth Police Chief Hal Claus said he
understands the • town's concerns about
costing, but added the town couldn't get
much better coverage than it already gets
for its dollar. He said the three-man police
force is giving the town 29 -hour protection,
seven bays a week. •
"I've known lots of 14 -men units who go
off duty at 2 or 3 a.m.," he said. '
"You can't expect the sante amount of
coverage from a $30,000' -a -year man that
you get from a $39,000 -a -year man. To make
things cheaper you have to cut services."'
"You'll get more service from local police
than from the OPP, but then you'll be pay-
ing premium for it. It's really a political
decision which doesn't concern me."
Chief Claus said he• expects the whole
issue is just -a round about way of forcing the
provincial government to give further fun-
ding to municipal police forces. Although
OPP •services would be contracted out to
municipalities, provision of those services
could Trove a burden on the provincial
government.
"The, government may find they're not
getting much bang out of their buck and we
could get greater subsidy because of in-
creased costs," said Chief Claus.
