Golf is a difficult sport. Although it doesn't require a high fitness level it does require good hand eye coordination, strength, flex- ibility, and judgement. Golf .is difficult enough for the average or athletic person yet there are many disabled golfers enjoy- ing the game. Larry Fournier of Norway Me. was crippl- ed by polio at the age of 10 yet he is a suc- cessful businessman, a father of three children, and plays golf regularly to a 12 handicap. Fournier encourages disabled . Ben Hogan Award for overcoming serious people to be athletic -minded and offers injury or illness to actively play golf again, himself as an example. There are many golfers who are legally blind and require the assistance of caddies' ON THE GREENS by Carolanne Doig' Then there is Dennis Walters, probably the best known disabled golfer. At the age of 25 Walters, already a fine golfer, was, the 'victim of a freak golf car accident. The acci- dent left him paralysed- from the waist down. Walters cannot walk yet he plays several rounds of golf a week from a special- ly designed golf car with a swivel seat. He can drive the ball 210-225 yards and when on the green he uses leg braces and a crutch that allows him to putt one -handed. Walters consistently scores ' . the low 80's and high 70's, and he gives demonstrations and clinics showing people that golf can be en- joyed by the disabled.
