THE HU-RoN .EXPOSIT(512, MAY 27, 1967 —
AAeichants win home. opener by one run T5:14
The Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens
Hardball team squeaked by with a 15-14 win
"in Sunday's home opener against
Thorndale. - •
The Merchants, down 14-13 going into the
bottom of the ninth inning, Waited until two
were out before putting their bats 'to work
• and etching out the win. Rill Dale hit a single
that sent John Cairns, on base* because he
'
washit by a pitch, to home plate to tie things
up. bale &based the plate himself
later when Kevin Bennett fired a live
grounder that bounced aver the short stop.
It was ap Merchants coach Marc Robinet
called "a back and forth ball game". Ahead

lost that advantage when Thorndale scored
five -runs in the second inning. Seaforth
could Only retaliate with one.
A four run count in the fourth inning once
again gave the Merchants the lead and they
strengthened it with one more run in the
fifth and two in the sixth, while holding their
• opposition to zero. •
• Disaster, however, struck 'in the seventh
• inning when a tiring Robinet on the mound
• was unable to get a third out. Bennett was
brought in to provide some relief pitching •
bin the toll was great and Thorndale took a
12-11 lead.
The Igerchants revived sarnewhat and by
the end of the seventh inning had moved
ahead by one run. Thorndale tied things
up in the eighth inning then.went ahead 14-13
in the ninth to force Seaforth to use their
•final bat.
• Robinet, who pitched 6 2/3 innings,
.recorded seven strike outs and gave up 12
pins, six of them earned, before being
replaced by Bennett.
• Bennett gave up tOo runs during his 11/3
innings on the mound. .
Clendon Coombs, who pitched the final in -
fling for Seaforth, was the winning pitcher. •
"...he made a
sensational catch."
•
•
He allowed one hit.
Don Williamson was the team's top hitter
connecting four of his five Miles at bat. He
counted six RBIs.
,Also hot with the bat was Bill Dale: who
soon
went two for two for he afternoon: Brian
' Cooper went three for four and Marty
• Bedard two fOr three.
• Joe Aubin made the play of the game
when he. defeated all the .odds and caught a
ball hit deep into right field. •
"-I thought it was gone," said Robinet. -.•
"Joe misjudged it at first and then with
• one spinerama he . made a sensational
catch." •
As for the general performance of the
team Robinet said there are areas that need
improvement: •
"I'm very very happywith the win, but we
need •to cut down on our errors. Our hitting
isn't bad but we could improve a little bit. ,
The pitching was 'pretty goed.'I'm happy
- with it, although I was a little erratic at
times," he said.-.
The Merchants committed 11 errors in'.
Sunday's.game and leftsix men on base. At '
thesame time they recorded 15 hits and only
five players struck out. •
The win gives the IVIerchants a 1-1 record -
so far this season. They lost 6-2 in Exeter
Tuesday night.: Exeter won the league last '
year. ,•
"We probably played better • Tuesday
night than we didSunday,". said Robinet,
