LEARNING CAN BE FUN - Kindergarten at Seaforth Public School is the perfect place to enjoy a
lesson on measurement and volume. As you' can tell, Darren Sutherland and Adam Leonhardt do
not heed encouragement to complete their assignments. SPS photo, .
Members of the adult community; upon
entering the ,Kindergarten or :Grade One
classrooms at Seaforth Public School, will
quickly notice that priMary education has
definitely changed since their' days in
school.. Those straight rows they sat in have
been replaced by learning centres, and
*hole class instruction is given at the cir-
cle' in the classroom, with children going
out froln it afterwards to begin a variety of
activities at carefully planned centres.
It's hard not to notice, as one moves
around these rooms full of actire", interested
learners, that young children are taking on
a lot more responsibility for their Warning

gone by. As they explore, they experience
new concepts. They can Verbalize their feel-
ings, check their beliefs in comparison with
those of others their age, and move on to
more exploration. They too; are able to stop,
listen, or present ideas to the group en cue.
They complete activities and clean up in a
way that would make the most. meticulous
homemaker proud:
Changes like these are not without their
costs and demands. 'They require the
dedication and energy of a teacher commit-
ted to organization, instruction, guidance
and caring. They require resources, special
materials and equipment, that keep pace in
a fast -changing technological age. They re-
quire the cooperative efforts of parents,
community groups and older students in the
• school to provide the guidance when and
where it is needed.
• Since the most recent eductional research
• is pointing to the importance of those.early •
• years of education, Seaforth Public School,
is urging that the greatest future financial
efforts be made on behalf of the youngest
students in the system.
