Here it is mid-Januarya time when FROM THIS ANGLE hearty Canadian is uusually red,cheeked and 1 _ brimming with health from regular cold - weather exercise.•Normally, marathon snow- by,Patrick Raftis shovelling sessions and lengthy walks to call gonE HERE'S THE BEEF by Carolaime Doig It's a darned shame For someone who was born andeducated in - the age of mechanization, I am totally out of niy, depth when ,something breaks down. I was never the mathematical type and have always felt that mathematical and mechanical - went hand in. hand. Perhaps because they both begin with m.and sound intimidating. No, Em not into • machines, at • least certainly not by choice. The necessity •of having a car, furnace, toaster, or television • has forced metodeal with'machines at home, while on the job I'veworked with (orshould I say at themercy of) everything from tractors to typewriters. Machines aresuch wonderful things when they are doing what they -were designed for,• There is no problem with toasters that toaster cars that start and stop at your every whirr.. Why, then it's a pleasure being in contact with such a remarkable invention. I have often marvelled at the amazing and seen -ting- ly endless tasks that machinery performs for us, When the toaster pops, the radio rocks, and photo copiers cough up crystal clear copies, I am at peace with the mechanical world. When something breaks down, or as' we' say "is on the • blink". (whatever that means), the first question I ask is , `"Why me?-", quickly followedby":Why now?" and; -" Why here?" I direct all these questions at . 'myself and even say them aloud in a high .pitched nasal whine • I'm sure you know • the tone: -' Another question that I've recently. aban- doned, reflected on the Confusing fact „that machines always seem -to. break down when you are using' them. 1 brought this up on several unfortunate occasions and received, such vile looks ;and condeseending.answers from the Mr.. Fixits of this world -that now I just whine.. However 1 can see.Mr. Fixit's point. "Of course machines only -break down:' when you are using them! You' don't, expect them to conk out when they're just- sitting there doyou???•" Frankly !don't expect them to conk ont at all. Of course I see the point but I th ink it's a darned shame. Imean,afterall, if the blasted thing's been sitting there a summer doing nothing and the lust time you need it it won'tstart,or run- properly—well, it's' a darned shame! Take my car (literally/. I don't know much abdut it except that its green.
