THE PERILS OF RAILROADING,
The °thee evening our reporter struck
a number of 'men now engaged in repairing
the 'railroad 'between Clinton and (lode -
rich, and the conversation turned upon
accidents occuring while coupling care,
"You see," said one,"it's a rule that all
employes coupling freight cars must use
a sticic to lift up the link, instead of their
hand, and a fellow runs a greater risk of
being caught and jammqd than Ube did
it the old way. Besides, some drivers are
ugly dustorners; they send a train back to
be coupled and run at twenty miles an
honk, and one's got to be mighty quick to
miss being caught by the buffers,"
"Men get caught pretty often, .don't
they?"
"You're
"You're right,they de, too d -d often.
Why, I saw my mate on a train get Caught
square in the chest, and the poor ' fellow
dropped between the _track and never
spoke again.. A good many of the ecci-
dents are through carelessness, Stratford

"Well, yes; partionlarly in the fall and •

incidentally mentioned that the interest
on mortgages could not be assessed, unless
the mortgagee had actually received the in -
tweet. It was in like Manner intiraated
that promissory notes could only be as-
sessed at the estimate of the holder, as no
other person was vio likely to know their
real value, some perhaps being worth one
hundred cents! on the dollar, and some not
worth twenty-five cents on the dollar, or,
possibly worth nothing at all. The whole
proceedings showed the absurdity and in.,
justice of assessing personal property. The
judge reduced Mr. McKihbon's assessment
$900. .
