CLINTON LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Children need their mothers To the editor: I am writing in response to the question of the Christian Heritage Party's stand on the role of wonte I feel the answer given at the All Candidates meeting in Clinton was in- complete. The CHP affirms that the role of women is equal There are many capable career women who have a lot of offer in our society. There is also the need for volunteers in all areas of social services, schools, coin - mimes, etc ... Many of these essential volunteer services are provided by women and many of them are mothers. I feel the role of a mother with young children is definitely in the home with her children. Yet she still has opportunities to give of her talents and capabilities in other areas. Her children will benefit from a mother who is active in other facets of life_ I feel the government has a responsibility to give mothers the choice to stay at home with their children. Who else is willing to provide a warm, loving Gpvironment which young children need? Who else is motivated by the intensity of love and pride to give 'um'lfishly of their time and energies? Will our society suffer when children are raised in a neutral, regulated setting such as daycare? I say yes and I say. government has failed allowing capable mothers wits are forced to find a job to mp- plPment their family income. Government may not introduce legislation and tax breaks that will make the choice for mothers to stay at home virtually impossi- ble. The CHP is opposed to the state govern- ing the raising of our preschool children_ Arlene Salverda 527-1929 or 528-3521 Secretary of the CHP for the riding of Huron -Bruce English, not French, essential for students The single most important educational goal for almost any student in Canada, is he/she is to have a chance of achieving his/her goals in life, should be to master the English language English is now the number one language of the world_ The French language (proper or Parisienne) -is very much lower rated and, world-wide, it is declining in use; French, as spoken in Quebec, is a variant of proper French. It seems a crime against English- speaking students in Canada that they are being coerced or forced to learn French in school rather than being able to concentrate on mastering the English language and grammar - a task sufficiently difficult that even few university graduates can claim to have totally mastered. Just one reason that learning English and French at the same time is particularly difficult for these students is that many words in French are similar yet different in spelling, pronuncia- tion, and/or meaning to English words. The danger of not mastering English first is that the student may well end up being incompe- tent in both languages. My advice to English-speaking parents is: Think long and hard before putting your child into a French immersion program; soon enough to learn French after English has been mastered. To jeopardize your child's chance of mastering the number one language of the world in order to gain limited fluency in a much lower rated language makes no sense. Donald F. Deeprose "3 ST.
