The Huron Expositor, 1988-11-16, Page 11Centenaires break 9 game
The Seaforth Centenaires broke a nine
game losing streak on Friday night, when
they' tied Mitchell 7-7. But on Sunday after-
noon they didn't fare as well when they
hosted Wellesley and came up on the losing
end of a 6-1 decision.
Seaforth opened the scoring in Mitchell
with only 1:04 off the clock on a goal by Brad
Carter assisted by Brad Beuttenmiller. The
Hawks answered with a goal of their own
minutes later, but a driving shot from Terry
Gray from the point gave the lead back to
the Centenaires. Don Brown and Rob Sloan
assisted. Mitchell put on a lot of offensive
pressure throughout the period, got 19 shots
on Centenaire goaltender Trevor Fortune,
and made good on two more scoring oppor-
tunities to take a 3-2 lead after the opening
period.
Mitchell's offense didn't slacken in the se-
cond period and halfway through the game
they had extended their lead to 5-2. A
Seaforth power play got the Centenaires
back in the game, and Brad Carter scored
with help from Steve Schroeder and Travis
Lyndon. Schroeder, moved up from the
blueline to play at centre ice, got a fourth
Seaforth marker as he broke in alone on the
Mitchell net and found a hole just over Mit-
chell goaltender Jeff Redfern's pad and just
inside the post. Before the second period ran
out Mitchell made the score 6-4.
35 seconds into the third period Seaforth
came to within a goal of the Hawks, as Brad
Carter got his hat trick assisted by Travis
Lyndon and Tim Moore. Only 15 seconds
later the Cents got a good bounce as Brad
Beuttenmiller lofted the puck into the air at
the Mitchell net and it went off the shaft of
Neil Corbett's stick and caught Redfern go-
ing the wrong way.
The score was tied at six until Mitchell's
Jeff Taylor made good on a power play to
get his hat trick and give his club the lead.
Carter did Taylor one better, as he carried
the puck down the left wing and placed a
slapshot in the top righthand corner, cat-
ching Redfern flatfooted and getting his
fourth goal of the night. Don Brown assisted
on the goal.
The score was 7-7 and it stayed that way
despite a barrage of shots by Mitchell in the
final minute of play. Mitchell is one of the
top Jr. D clubs in the league, but they gave
up a point to Seaforth Friday night.
Cam Doig, who was coaching the
Centenaires Friday in the absence of Marty
Bedard and because of the suspensions be-
ing served by Graham Nesbitt, remarked
that he has yet to see a Junior "D" team the
Centenaires can't beat if they play disciplin-
ed hockey.
Seaforth hosted Wellesley on Sunday
afternoon and had a lot of trouble capitaliz-
ing on scoring chances, and breaking the
puck out of their end. One bright spot in the
game saw Ron Pryce stand in front of the
net, take a pass out of the corner from Brad
Carter, and make it count. But Wellesley
losing streak
had more consistant offense and by the The Centenaires next game will be
game's end they had six goals to Seaforth's Wednesday night in Lucan, on Friday they'll
one. Seaforth was out -shot 46-22. be in Exeter, and Sunday will see them take
