"Having been the County seat since the
incorporation of the county in 1841, the
Town of Goderich is deeply concerned
from a historic, social and economic view,
not only for the Town but for the county as
a whole, and sees urgent need for a com-
plete and thorough study dealing with all
parts and possibilities of a potentially very
expensive situation," the letter reads.
The letter also requests that consultants
looking at the question be given complete
terms of reference, "with input from all
parties."
Clifford had earlier led' the town delega-
tion's criticism that 'the current county
study, with no terms of reference, is inade-
quate because it looks only at one alter-
native, that of moving the county seat to
Clinton.
Goderich Town Council has discussed
alternatives to that move both at ad-
ministration committee meetings and at a
special council session last week.
Among the suggestions, in addition to
finding a government ministry or other
suitable tenant f : Huronview, was a plan
whic '•4 see the town donate property
er the t runt} or the attorney
.ni.,Lry could build a new facili-
I'd keep both the county ad-
mir t 'Rees and the provincial
Ct .. u I ri h.
But council also agreed that the situation
is complex and even its point of view might
also be overly narrow without independent
study.
The town's 'r s'ipports that in re-
questing q I I consulting firm to in-
vestigate and analy ee all the ramifications
of any possible move and use of county
. buildings, particularly as all the alter-
natives may not be readily determined by
lay persons such as ourselves."
Also at the meeting Thursday, Huron
MPP Jack Riddell told county council that
despite space shortages for court pro-
ceedings at the Goderich Courthouse, it is
unlikely that the Ontario Ministry of the
Attorney General would be willing to pur-
chase the building for at least five or six
years.
Bell said that information, which he is
waiting to receive in writing, will have a
- hearing on the county's plans for the
Huronview site, and any possible move,
which could not proceed "unless we can
find a suitable use for that (Courthouse)
building."
HEALTH UNIT MOVE
r. Meanwhile, according to the minutes of
= several reports accepted at the session
Thursday, the move of the health depart-
- ment to Clinton is laready underway.
Council agreed to an estimated $73,000
renovation of the health building at Huron -
view to accomodate the health unit head
offices. The job would add five offices on
the building's second floor and one on the
main floor.
Tenders are to be called once the plans
are prepared.
