meet Iast,Thursday but that 'didn't mean
he wanted a win any less.
The 37 -year-old, who Is also known as a
quality blacksmith, capped off a great
season by reining his pacing mare to her
eighth win of the year in just 11 starts.
Muir's 12 dash wins were good enough to
take the title for most victories while his
Universal Driver Rating (UDR), .520, top-
ped the percentage category.
Since a driver is only eligible to win one
of the two categories, Monkton horseman
Ross Battin was named the winner of the
dash title as he captured 10 events during
the meet.
After a two year, absence from the
harness wars Muir decided it was time to
get back into the swing of things after the
completion of a little project he started
around the house.
"With the help of my in-laws (Mery and
Helen Nott), my parents (Dave and Doris)
and some very good friends, 2 built a new
ho"useBuck,"". explains Muir, nicknamed
With that major hurdle cleared, he was
ready to get back into the industry which,
according to Muir, is tough to shake.
"Once you're in this business it is nearly
impossible to get out. Besides, 2 needed
jsomeokes.thing to do with my spare time," he
"I was just looking for a horse to work
with when II finished the house and Case
(Buffinga, Jennifers Beauty's- previous
owner) and 2 got to talking one day and the
next thing II knew, 1 owned her."
The price certainly was right at $500 as
• the eight-year-old mare has banked over
$2,000 this summer to more' than double
her lifetime earnings.
His farm north of Seaforth is home to
four standardbred horses in training but
only one is Muir's. The rest belong to his
father.
"One is enough for me. 1 won't be look-
ing for any more until I lose her (Jennifers
Beauty)," he smiles.
The father of two, Andrea 18, and Jasen
15, got his first horse at a very early age.
"When I was about four or five, Santa
Claus left me a pony. I went downstairs
Christmas morning and there he was tied
to the tree," he recalls.
His first endeavor into the standardbred
market was with a mare named Rose
Herbert.
"She had a lot of thirds and fourths but I
never got a win with her," he remembers.
"My first win was with Gladys Boy, own-
ed by Larry Dale of Seafofth, at Clinton.
That's where I started racing."
His career as a blacksmith began at the
age of 15. It was more out of necessity than
anything else which lead to the move.
"I couldn't afford to pay a blacksmith so
I had to start shoeing them myself," he
says.
HARNESS DRIVER John "Buck" Muir took both the Dash and Top Winning Percen-
tage titles at Goderich Raceway's summer meet which concluded last Thursday. The
Seaforth native returned to the track this summer after a two year hiatus to complete
the construction of his raised -ranch style home. Muir's talents as a blacksmith are also
sought after. Williscraft photo.
Muir and his wife, Diane, don't par-
ticularly want to see their children involv-
ed in the harness industry but they can
make up their own minds.
"I hope they don't. I'm not trying to talk
them into it, that's for sure. It's too tough a
racket to get into," he notes.
Over the years Muir has handled some of
the better known area horses like G D
Direct and his personal favorite, Goldie
Chris.
With the Goderich meet now over, plans
call for Jennifers Beauty to get a start at
Clinton before they are done for the year
and after that, the Way Kid mare will get a
shot at Sarnia's new five-eighths mile sur-
face before winter sets in.
