BACK FROM TRIP - Madonna and Carol Ann McQuaid as they performed in Nova n
Scotia. Submitted photo.
McQuaids travel to Dartmouth
On July 7 the Committee of the 'Wartime
Old Time Fiddle Contest flew the McQuaids
(Madonna, Carol Ann and Mrs. Dolly Mc-
Quaid) from Toronto Airport to Halifax.
From Halifax they went by ferry to Dart-
mouth, Nova Scotia to be guest entertainers
sponsored by the Knights' of Columbus.
Jim Delaney of Dartmouth met the Mc-
Quaids at the airport and drove them to
their billeted homes, a Joe and Kaye Mc-
Quaid and a Bill and Teresa Doyle.
At 7 pm Thursday evening an open recep-
tion was held for the volunteer workers,
sponsors, guest artists and the entertainers
with a wine and cheese party, followed by a
buffet luncheon.
On Friday, July 8, a reception at the City
Hall with the mayor present.
Friday evening the preliminaries were
held for the Fiddle Contest at Prince An-
drew High School.
Saturday morning all fiddlers divided into
four groups to go to the nursing homes and
hospitals for an hour's entertainment. After
this everyone assembled in the church hall
for the "Fiddler's Brunch".
Saturday night the Maritime Old Time
Fiddling Contest held its finals and passed
out trophies, much the same as Ontario
does. The C.B.C. Radio taped and filmed the
final evening.
After the activities Saturday night,
everyone gathered in the church auditorium
for their traditional "fish -chowder".
Sunday morning all fiddlers gathered at
St. Thomas More Church at 10:30 for Mass:
Fiddle tunes were played until Mass started
and then all hymns were played by fiddle
with the congregation singing. The homily is
a fiddle weekend - homily and ecumenically
tuned.
Sunday afternoon a Maritime Old Time
Jamboree was held at Beazley Field with
outdoor fiddling and dancing.
Nova Scotia is a very green country, hilly,
and surrounded with several lakes and
bodies of water. The rivers are very clean
and there are no flies.
The McQuaids were driven back to the
airport at 3:30 pm in Halifax and arrived in
Toronto Airport at 6:10 pm.
"We will always remember the people of
Nova Scotia, their warmth and friendliness
and how they went to great measures to
make our stay a real experience."
