This win put the St. Colurnban Mosquito II's into the "A" finals. In the "B" division final St: Paul's defeated Goderich by the score of 3-0. St. Columban minor soccer association presi- dent Frank Verberne presented the St. Paul's team the "B" division trophy and congratulated St. Paul's and Goderich on a well played soccer game. The "A" division final between the two St. Columban teams was the most exciting game played on the St. Columban soccer field in quite some time. The first half saw the Mosquito I team ap- ply most of the pressure. The game against Exeter must have tired the Mosquito II team as the Mosquito I's had them bottled up for most of the half and only the goalten- ding of Ryan Vandervliet kept the Mosquito I's from scoring. The first hall ended in a scoreless tie. The second half saw the play switch around as the Mosquito II's carried the play to the Mosquito I's. Fullback Scott Vosper and halfbacks Steve Mclnally and Steve Vanden Hengal played strong in helping goalie Jason Murray thwart many Mosquito II attacks. The first goal of the game and one of the prettiest of the tournament, midway through the first half, came off the foot of Mosquito II player Pat Cook when he took a pass at centre, sped down the right side and drilled a shot to the far corner of the net, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Mos- quito II's. After that score the Mosquito I's started pressing and with 5 minutes left to play, Jason Henderson made one of his many rushes down the left side which brought the cheering spectators to their feet. He crossed a perfect ball that Ryan Vandervliet got a hand on but couldn't squeeze and Darrel Cronin was there to bang in the rebound, tying the score 1-1. This was the score when the game ended. It was too bad there has to be a winner in a soccer game as well played as this one. But, as in all tournament play, a tie is broken by a shoot-out. Five players from both teams alternately take penalty shots. Mosquito II players Mike Smale, Joe Murray, Jeff Ryan and Jeff Flanagan scored while only Jason Henderson and Justin Rooney replied for the Mosquito I's - ending the game 5-3 for the Mosquito II's. Since one of the jobs the St. Columban minor soccer association has is to promote soccer in the area, tournament organizers Ken Coyne, Barb Vosper, Marian Van Dooren and Frank Verberne should be pro- ud of the calibre of soccer played during the entire tournament and especially the final game, showing the spectators the excite- ment and the teamwork involved In the game of soccer. It was a job well done. Team members of the Mosquito I team are: Jason Henderson, Colin Devereaux, Jeremy Trubner, Scott Vosper, Lawrence Flanagan, Mike Watt, Steve Mclnally, Steve Vanden Hengal, Darrel Cronin, Bill Ryan, Dave Middelgaal, Mike Weber, Carl Terp- stra, Justin Rodney and Jason Murray. Coach Bill Vosper. Team members for the Mosquito II team are: Casey Hoven, Joe Murray, Wayne Schoonerwoerd, Mike Devereaux, Boyd Devereaux, Jim Crowley, Jeff Ryan, Jamie Stapleton, Pat Cook, Mike Smale, Jeff Flanagan and Ryan Vandervliet. Coach Albert Hoven, 42.
