St. Columban parish welcomes new priest
St. Columban will be welcoming a new
Priest to its community, as Father Joseph
Hardy will be taking over the pastoral
duties of the St. Columban Roman Catholic
Church.
Father Hardy arrived in St. Columban
last week. He has spent several years in
Huron County, and knows the territory and
its people. He has served in Strathroy, in
parishes in London, in Clinton for six years,
in Goderich for three years, and in Sarnia
for the past year. Now Father Hardy has
been appointed in St. Columban for the next
six years.
Father Hardy is originally from Chicago,
and was raised there until he came with his
family to London at the age of 15. He worked
far eight years as a clerk at a mortgage
company in London, and then decided to go
back to school. After a lot of thought he
decided to_apply at a seminary, and in 1965
he was ordained at St. Peter's in London.
Father Hardy was assigned to the parish
in St. Columban for a couple of reasons.
"Personally I have a need to be part of a
parish where there is a strong sense of com-
munity," he says, "and that's the way I read
this parish."
Also, Father Hardy has been given
another job which will take up most of his
time, so he has been given a smaller parish.
The parish he had in Sarnia consisted 'of
I,families, where the parish he has in St.
Columban is made up of about 100 families.
This smaller parish will give Father Hardy
more time to deal with the job he has been
given as Director of the Diocesan Commis-
sion on Evangelization.
Father Hardy says this commission is
basically to study "marketing" the Catholic
faith, and will occupy about two-thirds of his
time. Currently the commission is involved
in organizing a conference to take place on
October 29 in London. This conference will
take an inventory of what's happening to
promote faith in the diocese (from Windsor
to Wingham).
The commission will deal with the
catholics who are regularly in the pews:
"We'll see that they know their faith and
are able to try and live it."
It will also deal with those who have
drifted from the church, and see they are
able to return. And it will try to appeal to
the vast number of unchurched. According
to provincial surveys two-thirds of the
public no longer have an effective church
connection.
Father Hardy is director of the commis -

FATHER JOSEPH HARDY took over the pastoral duties of the parish of St. Columban
Roman Catholic Church on June 27. Father Hardy has also been appointed the Direc-
tor of Diocesan Commission on Evangelization, and will spend much of his time in Lon-
don evaluating how best to "market" the Catholic faith. Corbett photo.
sion and is also the coordinator of the In-
itiating Real Action Committee which will
be doing most of the commission's work.
Because Father Hardy will be living in
London through most of the weekdays and
at the parish part time, he will have a
pastoral assistant. Sister Rita Coyne, a
native of St. Columban who is currently in
Goderich, will be at the parish during the
week beginning in August. She will be a con-
tact person for those in the parish and will
be initiating some adult education
opportunities.
