As of press time, The Huron Expositor
has received five nominations for the
Heart of Gold Award, a program spon-
sored by Air Canada in conjunction with
the Community Newspapers Association.
The program has been organized to give
recognition to those persons in our com-
munity who give of themselves to others.
The Heart of Gold Award is available to
all Canadian residents 19 -years -of -age and
older who are nominated by a person from
their community.
A special certificate will be presented
this summer to all those nominated. All
nominees are eligible for consideration as
a recipient of Heart of Gold Award.
Remember this is your opportunity to of-
ficially say "Thank yourto those good
folks who think of others first. Let's pull
together and give credit where credit is
due.

Brian received an honorable mention for
Ms research and 'splay on waste manage-
ment. He calculated what percentage of
waste is recylcable, biodegradable, and
which should go to a landfill site. In addition
to this he determined the best type of soil for
landfill site in rain and dry weather -he
found clay to be best overall.
Tammi ,'d a study on insecticide and how
it kills earthworms. This project won her a
silver medal, a $111 Junior Conservation
prize, and a $150 Junior Agric ture award.
Jason's project on microwaves did not
take any awards on the national level, but
all the students were treated to an active
week in Winnipeg.

Councillor Bill McLaughlin also express-
ed no problem with the Canada Day
opening...
"Canada Day falls on a bad day this year -
Friday. Business is pretty competitive and
these store owners must have a feeling other
area stores of the same calibre will be open.
They're the ones that pay taxes i) this town.
I don't have any qualms with them opening
on Canada Day - this year."
Councillor Harry Hak was less calm about
the matter, and intimated if the by-law were
passed it would undermine the special ac-
tivities being planned by town organizations
for that day.
"The thing that bothers me is that this
day, that used to be Dominion Day and is
now Canada Day, is a special day. So let's
celebrate it," he said.

The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was
celebrated in Knox Presbyterian Church
on Sunday, June 5 with Rev. Steven Webb
officiating.
Mrs. Patrick Adams and children,
Manotick, spent a few days with Clare
Veitch and family. All attended the Veitch
reunion at Ayr on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Smith entertained
approximately 40 friends on Sunday in
honor of the 40th wedding anniversary of
Charlie and Joyce Lake, Atwood.
Harold and Anne Bragg attended Con-
vocation at the University of Guelph June
2. Christina Bragg's fiancee Robb Beagle
received his Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine.
The garage sale on Wednesday spon-
sored by the ladies of Knox Church proved
quite successful. The unusually cool
weather made it uncomfortable to be out-
side so everyone was anxious to get into
the basement for the food.
