The Huron Expositor, 1988-05-25, Page 13VERN DOLMAGE rolls down the ramp at his home in Seaforth. Corbett photo. Wheelchair access from page 3A disabled in mind while making changes to streets and buildings. "1 think they're doing a good job," he says, "if the did everything all at once wouldn't pe ,ple complain about the taxes." One thing Mr. Scott mentioned he would like to see, and Mssrs. Doimage and Dale agree, is transportation. When it's raining, or when they want to go a long distance lack of transportation is a big inconvenience for the disabled. Five or six years ago there was going to be a transportation network set up to service the area. The five towns in the county all agreed, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications agreed initially, but MTC never gave the project final approval and it ended up just serving Clinton. Mr. Scott says he doesn't expect to see transportation available right away, but says it Would be nice. There are improvements that could be made to make accessibility better in Seaforth, but in general Mr. Dale, Mr. Scott and Mr. Doimage agree, as things now stand they can be active members of the community. The Township of Morris also received a $40,000 grant. Wawanosh Township is one of the municipalities receiving a total of more than $600,000 in provincial OHRP funding. Administered by municipalities, the pro- gram assists homeowners in upgrading their homes, with the emphasis on correc- ting faulty. structural and sanitary condi- tions, as well as improving plumbing, in- sulation, heating and electrical systems. Loans of up to $7,500 are made available to eligible owner -occupants who wish to br- ing their homes up to standard. A portion of a loan may be forgiven, depending on the recipient's income. Interest rates range from zero to 10 percent, again depending on income. For applicants, the maximum annual qualifying income, after allowable deduc- tions are made, is $21, I. Wawanosh Township has , previously received $40;000 in grants which have helped upgrade five units. OHRP benefits are available to owner - occupants in all municipalities which have adopted minimum housing standards by- laws or resolutions establishing standards, and have decided to take part in the pro- gram. In communities without municipal boundaries, OHRP is administered by the Ministry of Housing in conjunction with the Ministry of Northern Development. More than 40,060 Ontario homeowners have benefitted from OHRP since the pro- gram was announced in 1974. OHRP is one of the Ministry of housing's initiatives to help conserve housing in Ontario. dI Update given on land stewardship program Over 400 applications have been received by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food for the Land Stewardship program. Applica- tions dated March 6 or earlier have been processed. The program budget is very limited and as such, not all applications will be received completely approved. The application will be conditionally approved after a budget Is allocated, with the idea that as some ap- plicants fail to meet their goals, more money will come back into the program. The money will then be allotted as originally stated, first come, first served. Due to the volume of applications, not all applicants will have received notification of their standings by this time. Even if you haven't received this notification, you must have an inspection following completion of a project. If you complete any projects eligi- ble and applied for them under the Land Stewardship Program please inform the Huron County OMAF office as the inspec- tion should be done as soon as possible.
