The Huron Expositor, 1988-05-18, Page 18Egmondville UCW discuss farm issue The May meeting of Egmondville United Church Women was held on Monday, May 2 at the manse. President Doris Carnochan presided, opening with a poem "Why Should I Complain". A brief business period followed and several coining events were noted. The worship period was opened with a quiz on Food and Farm Costs. Many were surprised at some of the answers. Cheryl Ann Stadelbauer-Sampa introduced a video relating to "Farm and Fishing Today" nar- rated by Don Langford, United Church Foodgrains Co-ordinator. Mr. Langford discussed and interviewed several United church farm members one of whom was a former U.C.W. member, Bertie Blake. Feelings of discouragement, loneliness and low wages were discussed. A major pro- blem is cash flow and how pressure on each farmer relates to stressful situations. Mr. Langford reported many farm accidents in- volving children who were trying to help to keep costs down. In Canada, 251,11 farms have been lost in the past few years. Nearly one-half of the United Church members ip consists of farm families, so involves caring and sharing by all members. The London conference has set up a rural co-ordinator to give assistance to congregations. The local U.C.W. members related their feelings on their farm experiences too. People need to be reminded how our food is produced the cheapest in the world and how important our farm community is. Rev. Cheryl Ann read a feature titled "Who Cares Really?" and closed with prayer. Members were reminded of June meeting to be a dinner at Blue Foun t:in Restaurant in Clinton, followed by a visit to the School Car. Cars will leave the church at 5:45 pm with Wanda Dietz in charge. Local jeweller attends conclave Cathy Anstett of Anstett Jewellers Limited, Seaforth, attended the 1988 American Gem Society (AGS) Conclave in Toronto between April 23-26. Jewellers learn about the latest industry developments, hone their gemological expertise and gain other impor- tant information during the intense four-day program. Sessions on appraisals, diamond and colored stone grading, pearls and detec- ting gemstone treatments were included in the program. Business and marketling courses were also offered. The 54 -year-old Society has provided over half a century of dedication to improving and advancing gemological education in the jewellery industry and providing consumer information to the public. Before the American Gem Society was founded in 1934, there was no formal organized gemological study in North America.
