Clean clu
It's that time of year again when
everyone's glued to the set watching the
Stanley Cup finals and at the same time
planning for their next round of golf.
Saturdays mean golf during the day and
hockey at hi a t. Wedding . receptions and
dances are almost empty of the male gender
until the final buzzer sounds. Schedules are
made around the p : yoffs, but sitting
around in front of the television can be pro-
ductive if you spruce up your golf
equipment.
Keeping your golf clubs clean is a step
towards lower scores. The grooves etched
into the faces of irons and woods are put
there to impart spin on the ball. If you're hit-
ting shots with an inch of dirt on the club,
you're not going to put much spin on the ball
..you'll be lucky to make a good shot at all.
Golfers should carr, a damp towel during
play and wipe the club face after each shot.
However, if you have things growing on
your clubs, haul them out, and with a bucket
of warm soapy water, give the faces and
shafts a good wash.
Grips are often neglected, yet they are the
point where you and your clubs meet. Clean
grips are tackier and allow for a more
secure feel. Smooth, slippery, grips result in
tentative shots so keep your grips clean by
washing them with warm soapy water and a
soft brush. If you have leather grips use a
proper leather cleaner. Remember, too,
that the clubs you use most, for example
your driver and wedge, often need new grips
before the rest of your clubs. Getting new
grips is almost like getting a new set of
clubs. It feels so much better.
Okay - it's the end of the first period and
you've cleaned the clubs - grips and all.
What next? Well how about dumping out the
golf bag - hopefully onto a newspaper spread
on the floor. Then clean out all the pouches.
This often quite interesting, because golf
bags can reveal all manner of things.
There's probably a few crumpled
scorecards - reminders of some good and
bad rounds. There's the old rule book - into
the garbage - time to get the new 1988 edi-

tion! Then there's all the litter you picked
up, old tees, older balls, a profusion of pen-
cils, the car keys that have been missing
since September, and tons of other good
stuff! Now it's time to repack. Keep the
balls and tees in one pouch, the rainsuit in
another, with a spare glove. Put the old balls
in your practise bag or give them to the kids.
New balls are a definite advantage. Don't
forget to attach a clean towel too - to keep
those clubs shining.
Well, we're just getting into the third
period and it's time to do shoes. First scrape
off all that grass you've been carrying
around. Then take out the spikes, rub them
with vaseline and replace them. Anyworn
ones should be replaced with new. If you've
just bought new shoes, take the spikes out
and put vaseline on them too before you
even wear them. The threads won't get rus-
ty and strip, so even if you lose a spike a new
one can be tightened in.
Now you're all set. If the game goes into
overtime, relax and cheer for your favorite.
If it's over after three, you haven't missed a
thing and you're all set for tomorrow's
game.
Men's night is off to a fine start this year
with about 25 golfers out for the last two
nights. In the first week winners were Ken
Janmaat, Cam Doig, Todd Caldwell, Joe
Dick, and Mike Marion. Last week's win-
ners were Todd Doig and Moe Huard. All the
men are reminded to sign up now for the
Men's Club match play for the Don Eaton -
Brad Smith Trophy also the Labatt's Na-
tional Team Pro Am(formerly the Crown
Life Pro Am).
The Huron Oaks Men's Invitation is May
28.
Ladies night was stormed out on May 9
but the ladies should be getting started this
week. Sign up for the ladies match play plus
leagues end
fun nights in Exeter and Sunset in June. Up-
coming ladies tournaments are Bluewater,
June 8 and the District Better Ball Cham-
pionship in Seaforth June 15.
Senior Games golf is Wednesday, May 25
at the local course.
There's a rules Clinic in Seaforth, Thurs-
day, May 19 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. for
any interested male golfers.
The Seaforth Legion Mixed 2 -Ball is on
Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. at the local
course. Contact Linda Gridzah if you wish to
play in this fun event.
Rule of the Week: Q. A player's ball lies in
a hazard. The ball moves because the player
removes a loose impediment in the hazard.
What is the ruling?
A. The player incurs a penalty of three
strokes - two for moving a loose impediment
in a hazard (Rule 13-4c) and one because the
ball moved (Rule 18-2a). The ball must be
replaced (18-2a).
UP FOR THE REBOUND - The basketball players at the basketball camp held at
Seaforth District High School recently got a chance to test their skills after a month of
training. On Saturday the hoop players held a five game series to finish up the basket-
ball camp. 18 boys and 10 girls from Grade 6, 7, and 8 attended practices every night
for two weeks,, and 'twice a week for another two weeks to learn the basics of basket-
ball. Corbett photo.
Karate teaches respect, not contempt
KARATE - the word still strikes fear in
the hearts of many parents, "I don't want
my child training to be a killer," they say.
This horrid image has been created and en-
dorsed by the stereotyped Hollywood
heroes. You know the movie martial artist
who single-handedly wipes out the entire
U.S. Marine Corps using an array of exotic
weapons never seen anywhere before.
The true martial artist is a breed apart
from this blood -thirsty maniac with his
arsenal of death. The serious karate student
has a great respect for all living things. He

N. M. Hayes,
Secretary
has been trained by his instructor to view all
life as precious and sacred. He must follow a
strict code of ethics and use his skills only to
defend himself if attacked.
The physical training a karate student' en-
dures not only builds his body but also
shapes his character. A student who doesn't
quit because the workout are too rough, isn't
going to quit when life gets tough. He will be
better prepared to face challenges and have
the self-confidence to stick by his decisions.
Not everyone who joins karate acquires
the coveted black belt, but everyone gains
something. It may be a better physical
shape or a better outlook on life. It could be
courage, strength, discipline or self-
confidence. It could be a more courteous at-
titude or respect for others. The more skill
and knowledge you gain the more you grow.
The harder you train the better you develop.
Everyone should study the martial arts. It
helps build character and also improves
your mental and physical awareness. It is
tragic that so few people take advantage of
the well-being and feeling of brotherhood
that karate training can provide.
