Merchants split doubleheader
The Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens
Hardball team recorded a split in a
homeopening doubleheader against Walker-
ton on Sunday. The Merchants lost the first
game by a 3-1 score, then rallied to take the
second one, 6-5 in extra innings.
WALKERTON 3 -MERCHANTS 1
Game one remained scoreless throughout
the first four innings, but the fifth inning
was more eventful.
With two batters retired Merchant relief
pitcher Dave Akey (who came in for Clen-
don Coombs in the fifth) ran into trouble on
the mound, walkedthree players, then gave
up a single which allowed Walkerton to
score three runs. Gary Eisler got the
Seaforth team out of the inning.
The Merchants recaptured one of the
three runs in their half of the inning, on a
single by Gary Eisler, a sacrifice bunt by
Marty Bedard and an RBI single by Jerry
Feeney - but it wasn't enough. They were
unable to recoup any more of their losses.
Merchants strongmen at the plate includ-
ed; Eisler, who went two for two, Don
Williamson who went one for one with a
walk, John Cairns who went two for three,
Jim Campbell who went one for two, Joe
Aubin who went one for three and Jerry
Feeney who went one for four.
The Merchants recorded one run on eight
hits and two walks. They were struck out •
nine times and left 11 men stranded on base.
Walkerton scored three runs on two hits
and seven walks. They were struck out five
times and left seven men on base.
"We had great pitching (except for the
walks)," commented coach Marc Robinet.
"We only allowed two hits in seven inn-
ings, and we had enough hits ourselves. We
just didn't get the hits when we needed
them. We left 11 men on base and you can't
do that and expect to win."
Coach Robinet also noted, with some sur-
prise, that the Merchants made no fielding
errors during their first outing.
MERCHANTS 6-WALKERTON 5
An error by Walkerton in the third extra
inning of play not only gave the Merchants a
6-5 victory in game two, but allowed pitcher
Marc Robinet his first win in two years.
Robinet pitched eight innings for the Mer-
chants, corning in as relief for Eisler in the
third. Eisler gave up three runs (only one of
them earned) on three hits, walked two bat-
ters, and struck out two. Robinet allowed two
runs (only one of them earned) on five hits,
walked four batters and struck out 12 in get-
ting the win.
The scoring started early in this game,
with Walkerton recording an unearned run
in the top of the first inning to take the lead.
The Merchants retaliated in their half of
the inning with three runs of their own. Jim
Campbell started things off with a single,
then advanced to second when Jeff Dupee
was walked. Don Williamson was kept safe
at first on a fielder's choice, then both he
and Campbell were powered home by a dou-
ble from the bat of Feeney. Feeney scored
on an error to the shortstop before the inning
concluded.
? I alkerton tied things up in the second inn-
ing, then scored again in the third to take a
4-3 lead. The lead was short, ived. Seaforth
tied the game in the same inning.
The Merchants moved into the lead again
in the sixth inning when Joe Aubin doubled,
then scored on an Akey single. Seaforth held
that lead until the seventh inning when
Walkerton scored to tie things up and force
the extra innings.
The game finally ended in the tenth inn-
ing, when with two out, Akey walked, then
scored all the way from first on a three -base
error by Walkerton's right fielder, on a ball
hit 1w rib.
The Merchants scored six runs on nine
hits and six walks. They struck out eight
times and left 12 men on base. Walkerton
scored five runs on eight hits and six walks,
struck out 16 times and also left 12 men on
base.
Merchants hitters in game two were;
Akey who went two for two, Feeney who
went one for one, Campbell who went two
for three, Robinet and Joe Aubin, who both
went one for three, and ''! illiamson and Ray
Anstett who both went one for five.
"Like the first game we had good pit-
ching. With the exception of the walks we
had only eight hits. But we got some timely
hitting in this game - although we are still
leaving too many men on base," said Coach
Robinet.
"For the first two games of the season
though, we were happy with a split."'
The Merchants play in Strathroy tonight,
but the date and time of the next home game
was unavailable at press time.
SAFE AT THIRD - The throw from behind the plate wasn't fast enough to stop this
Walkerton base runner from making third base, and the ball hit Dave Akey's glove as
the runner hit the bag. Corbett photo.
