Under New Recreation Facility Capital Grants, the Town of Goderich will receive $40,000 to construct squash courts adjacent to the community centre. In addition, the Exeter Lions Club will receive a grant of $91,259 to construct a Youth Centre for use by young people in Exeter and other com- munity organizations. "As communities grow and change, so do their recreation needs," Mr. O'Neil said. "These Wintario grants help ensure new and existing facilities are available to meet the changing needs, for the benefit of the entire community." Wintario Capital Conservation Grants have been awarded to five other com- munities. These grants help prolong the life of the facilities, so that they can con- tinue to provide quality service and help foster the well-being of generations of their users. The following communities will benefit from these funds: • Howick Township: $4,267 to install new drains and bottom floor to the deep end of the Howick Swimming Pool and install a new liner. • Tuckersnhnth Township: $13,067 for new roofing and siding for the Vanastra Seaforth West Branch SISTER CITY GAMES. OPP warns anglers on trespassing Now that fishing season has officially opened, the local OPP detachment is con- cerned that anglers obey the laws of trespassing. "With the opening of fishing season May 1, anglers are reminded that obtain- ing property otmer's permission to walk across or fish on his property is required and is a polite etiquette. If permission is not obtained, you can be considered trespassing and this is an offense," Con- stable Paul Holmes, community service officer at the Goderich OPP detachment, said. He added trespassing on private pro- perty without permission is contrary to ' the Trespass of Property Act of Ontario. The act of trespassing can result in a fine of $53.75. awarded ecreation Centre. • Township of Grey: $4,835 to renovate the Cranbrook Hall to meet Fire Code regulations. • Stephen Township: $5,429 to install siding and roofing on the Dashwood Community Centre. • Town of Exeter: $38,325 for insulation and metal cladding on the outside of the South Huron Recreation Centre. "Recreation facilities are important centres of activity in our community, and it is gratifying to see these funds corrin@ into our riding to enhance \these ac• tivities," said Mr. Riddell. ■••aaaIMar7 /■ 1IIV/Mi■IlMINIMINIMM■ v .11111/111111.111111.11111 1 ► yi" • Ma •./a•aa••M•■ 11•1111MIUMM1111111 k li IL A `711.16 ---,II 'Wm" 411111111MIIIMEMINIMIN111111 111111.1.1.11.1.11.11.M.Ink / .1111, /1111L_ __.f .111. _All /111111=11111•1111NINNIMMINIII •••m•••• irar -mmummi it ■!► i■ iv it VIIa■••mam•11 ■1111111111111111111111111' 11111 •, 1 111111111111 M' ■' • 1/ u IF ,tom Iaa•aaa•■■■ •••••••••`, 1.t)ttil ■aaaa1 I/ Al IT I ,ST '" .AIIIINIIIIIIUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ■••••••••mak Mr ,MINIr711111 _ v ■r I AI it _ Iia••aaaaaaII ■IMINII111111111111111111111•& lI "1•11alw1 ■ 1 41 II i AI iIM••M•IOM•••i ■INIIIIIIIIIMINIIIMEHE 'I III•••L AI L. "If they were closed Sunday they would e. There are kinds of places within the province which would simply die if closed Sundays." What many merchants fear from the pro- posed legislation is that if one town is open Sundays others will have to be open as well to stay in competition. But Mr. Riddell doesn't see this domino effect coming into the picture. Using Huron County as an example, Mr. Riddell explains -Bayfield is open. Sundays, Grand Bend -is open Sundays, and Blyth has some stores'open as does Goderich. "Do we see Clinton or other towns opening to stay in competition?" he asks. "There TO PREPARE FOR THIS SALE EVENT RIVETT'S L MITED WILL BE CLOSED WEDNESDAY, MAY 4th STORE WIDE SALE VEN will be no more domino effect with the new bill than there is now." Mr. Riddell puts faith in the municipal system, that if the people don't want their businesses open on Sundays, their municipal governments won't go against their will and pass bylaws which conflict with what the people want. As far as Mr. Riddell is concerned the legislation accommodates different needs in different municipalities. Border cities like Windsor, he says, need Sunday shopping to compete with neighboring Detroit which has Sunday openings. Mr. Riddell further explains the province does not currently have coherent, en- forceable retail opening legislation, and legislative amendments are needed. To this end, on April 14 the Government of Ontario proposed amendments to the Retail Business Holidays Act and the Employment Standards Act which allow for the municipal option, and set stricter borders around the existing legislation. Part of what the legislation will do is make December 26 a public holiday, protect retail workers who refuse unreasonable assignment of Sunday work, and protect retailers who observe a Sabbath other than Sunday. At a cost of $7,000, Fax is a fac- simile machine which enables a sender and a receiver to instantaneously transmit hard copy documents over normal telephone lines. Desktop publishing will be funded to the tune of $10,000. Desktop publishing allows computerized publishing of school and board newsletters, information brochures, public relations booklets, and curriculum support materials. These materials are ata quality standard equivalent to that of com- mercial offset printers at a much reduced , cost. A stand-alone computer, laser printer and minor accessories are all, the hardware necessary for the system. Building and facility upgrading at the education centre, as well as school yard drainage work, was budgeted for $60,000 originally but had to be reduced, and also cut back was concrete and asphalt replace- ment and painting slated at $50,000. $30,000 was deducted from these projects to make them fit the special projects budget. Drug and alcohol prevention incentives were provided by the board this year. The ADAPT program was successful in secon- dary schools in 1987 and the board put $3,000 in their budget this year to continue such pre.rention incentives. $20,000 for computers in school offices and libraries has also been allocated. Three secondary school offices have computers and two elementary schools have been operating for about six months as pilot sites, and five additional elementary schools have recently acquired office computer equip- ment. Principals in these schools have urg-' ed with unanimous support that the board undertake to provide computer equipement for all school offices as soon as possible and financially viable. The conversion from manual to electronic facilities in all the board's schools could take up to three years. A two-way radio system for buses has been discussed with bus contractors, township road officials, bus drivers, and members of the parent community. The estimated capital cost will be $27,000. Maintenance and upgrading of the board's musical instrument inventory will cost $10,000 this year, $40,000 will be provided for technological studies in each of the five high schools. $11,500 had to be allocated to eliminate pupil fees for Industrial Arts and Family Studies in Grades 7 and 8, This is funding the board must provide, as it has been judged il- legal to charge students for these courses. And pay equity was dealt with. $20,000 was forecast to be set aside for salary ad- justments, but the board set aside only $10,000. January 1 pay equity will become a legal reality in Ontario, and the board will have to catch up the other $10,000 in 1989.
