The Conference, organized by Lord Plumb, President of the European Parlia- ment, brought together in Brussels, Belgium, some 300 invited experts knowledgeable in agricultural trade and food aid matters. Delegates from all parts of the world discussed the challenges and op- portunities currently facing the world agricultural trade environment. Mr. Blais emphasized Canada's commit- ment to finding multilateral solutions to the problems which plague today's interna- tional agri-food trading system. He highlited Canada's agricultural objec- tives in the Uruguay Round of the Multilateral Trade Negotiations. These in- clude securing and improving market ac- cess on a worldwide basis, as well as the reduction of trade -distorting subsidies and bringing trade under more effective and equitable international rules. 'It is certain that prospects for a sac- cessful result of the Round will be enhanced appreciably if the negotiations proceed on a comprehensive basis," the Minister noted. In addition, Mr. Blais further reinforced Canada's efforts, together with a number of other agricultural exporting countries, to press for agreement in principle on the elements of a comprehensive agricultural package. He said he hoped for an agreement in time for the GATT mid-term ministerial review of the Uruguay Round which will be held in Montreal in December. Mr. Blais complimented Lord Plumb for his timely initiative in bringing together such a distinguished cross-section of in- dividuals from the global agricultural com- munity. The Minister also underlined the need for industrialized countries to accept their collective responsibility to improve the current international agricultural situation.
